Devin is a nice town with a number of good restaurants - seems to be a place where Bulgarians go on holiday to. Wonderful hiking opportunity at Strulitsa Eco Trail Path. Perhaps the most beautiful, stunning hike weve ever done. In the evening the town of Devin came to life with traditional dancing in the town square which was a joy to attend.
Bulgaria is a must visit holiday destination & Devin a wonderful town to see & experience. Well worth visiting!!
1. In deluxe double room without a balcony, where we were accommodated, the furniture was already depreciated.
2. In terms of cleanliness - there is much to be desired...
3. Every shower in bathroom, despite the certain being drawn all the way, the floor was constantly wet and did not drain.
4. Spa was not well maintained.
5. Other guests did not follow the rules in the spa area, pool, as well as the rest hours etc.
Baring this circumstances...
1. The reception and restaurant staff were really responsive and responded to our request for assistance!
The mountainous surroundings are also beautiful and absolutely worth exploring
The next morning I had to look for some time to find the breakfast room. I wondered through the deserted lobby and various staircases, looking for staff in vain. When I eventually found the breakfast, it was hardly worth the bother. Coffee was like dishwater (perhaps it was) and the choice of food was poorer than at a student boarding house. In the middle of the room there was a pompous display of a champagne bottle in an empty ice bucket (no one was offering any). One tray contained three dried-up fried eggs and another several curled-up slices of bread. The yoghurt on offer was a few miniature children's pots imported from Germany, and this in the land which gave its name to the best yoghurt culture L. Bulgaricus! When I asked the waiter for a newspaper, he rudely sent me to get one myself from the reception two floors and three corridors away! When I eventually got there, the receptionist told me (quite embarassed) that the hotel did not have any papers for the guests and I had to buy some from the tiny news-stand beside the reception! And this was in a 5 star hotel!
Before checking out I asked to speak with the manager on duty. I told him what I just wrote here. He was not bothered at all and told me he would have to take samples from the bathroom to establish the state of cleanliness. He then sent a member of staff to check, only to declare that because I had used the bathroom he could not establish the original state of cleanliness of the bathroom. Similarly he dismissed my observations about the hard bed, the inadequate air-con, the tragic breakfast and so on. The receptionist was clearly mortified by his pomposity and rudeness, but could say nothing to make the situation better.
My advice would be don't bother with this overpriced, pompous and inadequate hotel, but go to the neighbouring Devin Hotel, where you will have all the comfort you need (including a properly working air-con.) and a superb reastaurant with all the gorgeous specialities Bulgarian hospitality is famous for and an excellent service to boot. I did this the next night and I do not regret it.
