Urayasu is part traditional fishing village, part Disney. It’s best known as the home of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea (and, naturally, the hotels, restaurants and shopping that accompany the theme parks). Most visitors are, naturally, here for the parks, but if you’re interested in the town’s history, a few old fishermen’s cottages can be toured.

White-sand beaches set the scene for a romantic tete à tete in Jimbaran, a quaint fishing village in Bali, Indonesia. Luxury hotels mingle with simple seafood shacks on the waterfront. Feed your paramour succulent chunks of freshly-prepared fish, then amble along the beach under the Indonesian moonlight before retiring to your five-star accommodations for the night... and the next morning.

The emirate of Sharjah offers an inviting combination of culture, heritage, art and outdoor activities. Home to the nation’s capital and biggest city of Warsaw, Central Poland is the entry point for most travelers who arrive in the country by air. Industrial Lodz, the second biggest city, is here too, almost exactly at the country’s middle. Poznan and Torun are also popular with tourists, each boasting very pretty Old Town areas. Kampinos National Park, Poland’s second-largest, covers about 150 square miles. It's within easy reach of Warsaw and is a great site for hiking, cycling and skiing.

A gorgeous backdrop of pine-clad mountains looms behind the seaside resort of Marmaris in southwest Turkey. Popular as a cruise ship and yacht port and with the British budget holiday crowd, Marmaris offers an abundance of fast food restaurants, the restored castle of Suleyman the Magnificent and an appealing cobblestoned old quarter. Outside the busy town, coves and bays of the Datça Peninsula make lovely daytrip destinations for those travelling by boat.

Containing a staggering wealth of historic sites, Turkey's inexpensive Aegean makes a marvellous introduction to both ancient and modern Turkey. Buses make easy connections between sites. Picturesque Bodrum boasts hopping nightlife, a crusader castle and the tomb of King Mausolus. The rest of the coast has Roman ruins and Byzantine remains aplenty, including Troy's walls, as well as the monument-strewn WWI battlefields of Gallipoli, the resort town of Kusadasi, fabulous surfing beaches and modern Izmir.
