Ko Chang means “Elephant Island,” and indeed, if you’d like an up-close-and-personal encounter with the world’s largest land mammal, you can do that here—you can even swim with them at Ban Kwan Chang, an elephant preserve recommended by TripAdvisor travellers. In the past few years, the island has experienced a huge boom in tourism, so new hotels and restaurants abound.

Khajuraho is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Madhya Pradesh. It's known for its enormous, intricately sculptured temples adorned by vignettes of passion, eroticism, dance, music and creative pursuits. It has 85 original temples, divided into three complexes. The western is the largest and best known, containing the magnificent Shaivite temple Kandariya Mahadev.

The landscape of Rodrigues Island is a dramatic combination of mountains, valleys, lagoons and cave systems. A guided exploration of the Caverne Patate reveals playful rock formations that were created by tectonic plate movement. Above ground, the François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve will acquaint you with the island’s rarest plants and most laid-back residents. Hike the central Mont Limon for majestic panoramic views or dive among intricate coral reefs. Get up early to visit Port Mathurin on market day, when the otherwise sleepy village springs to life.

Belek, a resort town on the Turkish Riviera, is known for very clean, white-sand beaches surrounded by pine forests. History buffs should plan day trips to the Roman ruins at Perge and the Aspendos amphitheater. Or if you’d prefer a round of golf, bring your clubs—there are excellent courses in the area.

The Pearl of the Mediterranean has an ambiance more in keeping with its neighbours to the north than with those in the Middle East. Site of Pharos lighthouse, one of the Wonders of the World, and of Anthony and Cleopatra’s tempestuous romance, the city was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE. Today, Alexandria offers fascinating insights into its proud Greek past, as well as interesting mosques, the casino strip of the Corniche, some lovely gardens and both modern and traditional hotels.
