    • Almeria
Founded by the caliph of Cordoba, this Andalucian city on Spain’s southeast coast is a reminder of the region’s Muslim history. The Alcazaba, a massive fort, dominates the city and affords amazing views. Also worth experiencing are the cathedral and the Almeria Museum. East of the city is the rugged, desolate Cabo de Gata-Nijar coast, a protected area. To the west is the resort area of Roquetas de Mar, featuring vast beaches.

    • Granada
Travel into Spain's Moorish and Christian history with every step you take in compact, walkable Granada. The famous Alhambra fortress is a required visit, as are the Alcaiceria (marketplace), the Cathedral and too many architectural sites to name. Wander through Granada's fascinating Moorish old quarter, the labyrinthine Albaicin; then plan to head out again by night, because the nightlife here is particularly lively.

    • San Jose

San Jose is a small town on the Costa Almeria in Andalucia. Originally home to just 175 people, it has become more and more popular as a small resort town, and its size means it is great for kids and perfect for a family holiday.

San Jose is a family friendly village, with lots to offer on a family holiday. The beaches are wild and unspoiled, particularly the striking Playa de Mónsul with its mixture of volcanic rocks and fine grey sand. The kilometre long Playa de los Genoveses is probably more in line with the average family's expectations of a Spanish beach holiday, however. If you are keen to do more than simply soak up the sun, however, San Jose offers many other activities, such as opportunities to go cycling and horse riding, or even boat trips and windsurfing sessions for the more nautically inclined members of the family! The small size of San Jose itself also means that it's a lovely unspoiled Andalucian town to explore, with a lovely park and sandy streets, with none of the high rise hotels that blight many other areas along the coast of Andalucia. Another lovely village in the area is Los Esculios, northeast of San Jose, and the track to visit the hamlet is a very popular walk in the area and highly recommended.

    • Lisbon
Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, has become an increasingly popular place to visit in recent years, with a warm Mediterranean climate in spite of its place facing the Atlantic Ocean. Full of bleached white limestone buildings and intimate alleyways, Lisbon's mix of traditional architecture and contemporary culture makes it the perfect place for a family holiday. Things to do in Lisbon: As Portugal's capital, there is a lot to see and do in Lisbon. Even exploring the city centre will take a few days out of a family holiday as there is no real central district, although Praça do Comércio is a good central place to start, in Baxia, or Rossio, the city's main square which has a sort of Trafalgar Square feel to it. Or you might try climbing up the Cristo Rei, a huge statue of Christ with spectacular views across the whole city. The Castelo de São Jorge also offers great views and isn't quite such a steep climb. A short tram ride to the west of Lisbon will also bring you to Belem, where you can explore attractions like the Belem Tower and the Belem Cultural Centre, which features a fantastic art collection including works by Dali, Picasso, Warhol and Magritte. In downtown Lisbon, you'll also want to visit the Gulbenkian, which has to be Portugal's answer to the British Museum full of fascinating cultural artifacts and with some superb gardens in the grounds. It's possible to have a fascinating educational family holiday in Lisbon, and there are also plenty of great beaches to work on your tan.

And don’t forget the shopping—whether your tastes run to Louis Vuitton or Les Puces (the flea market), you can find it here.

    • Fort Lauderdale
This canal-laced city is a far cry from its rowdy, party image of the past. Today, following renovation and renewal, upmarket stores and restaurants have replaced fast-food stands and T-shirt shops. But the city's biggest draws are its stretch of gorgeous beaches, great swimming, nearly year-round sunshine and close-to-ideal climate. For great shopping, dining and nightlife, you can't go wrong at Las Olas Riverfront, a waterfront entertainment centre with top-notch clothing and jewellery shops, bars and free entertainment. The city has a host of family-friendly options, such as Everglades Holiday Park and the Museum of Discovery and Science. With the network of canals and waterways, boats are part of the Lauderdale lifestyle, and tourists can get in on the act by hiring a boat or hailing a water taxi. There's a lot to do here, but make sure and spend some quiet time just soaking up the sun or strolling along the beach at dusk.

    • Quincy
Perched on the bluffs overlooking the mighty Mississippi, Quincy's landmark architecture, dogwood-lined streets and rolling green parks tell of a long and tiered history. Its location on the border of Missouri made it an ideal station point for the Underground Railroad, once in the aid of Mormons and later helping African Americans flee the slave states. Now the city's history is evident in its historic districts, architecture, museums, parks and landmarks.
