Add to your Jasper to do list.
A short drive from Jasper whether on the way to/or from lake Maligne. Loads of trails, stunning scenery. You have the choice of so many trails and if you don't want to trudge to bridges 5 and 6 you can drive to them on the road back to Jasper. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

    Jasper must do!
Amazing! Will definitely go back. Went the end of June and although the parking lot was busy, there is enough room on the trail that we didn't feel like people were everywhere. Walked bridges 1-4. Came back on the loop and would not go back on the loop, would have turned back and came the way we came. The loop away from the bridges is mostly uphill in the forest and not nearly as much to see. Saw a huge elk with antlers right outside parking lot.

    Wonderful and Interesting Canyon!
Maligne Canyon is a wonderful and interesting series of falls and canyon. Very nice hike, not too strenuous but was definitely crowded the day we went. We hiked bridges one through four and enjoyed it. We were here after lunch and it was very crowded so I would suggest to see this canyon either real early or later in the afternoon after the crowds calm down!

    Absolutely Fabulous!
Yes, Please take the hike through the path in the canyon. The water is powerful. They do offer private tours with guides .. This is a beautiful hike well over 1 hour long. Not strenuous if you have transportation at the end

Enjoyable walk around the maligne canyon
It was enjoyable moderate walk with some steep climbs and it's very picturesque and fairly busy. It took Approximately 3-4 hours to complete, the rocks were very slippery to walk on. I would definitely recommend hiking here and there being a restaurant located at the start.

Leisurely hike though beautiful mostly shaded canyon
We arrived at about 9:30am, parked at the 5th bridge parking area and hiked up the canyon to the first bridge. We had a 11:00am lunch reservation at Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen, and this worked out perfectly. The 1 1/2 hour hike was slightly uphill, but definitely not too tiring. It allowed for a leisurely pace with plenty of photos. The area was not too crowded this time of day. Highly recommend lunch at the Wilderness Kitchen. We then hiked back to the car the same way (which was fortunately downhill at this point). There is another route you can take back to the parking lot, but it is more through forest, and we preferred to hike back along the water/canyon. It allowed us to see if from a different perspective and take photos we had missed.

    Don't Miss!
This canyon is very interesting and beautiful and I would definitely recommend seeing it while in the Jasper area. We followed the suggestions in other reviews to hike the first few bridges and then drive up to the 6th bridge. We also ate at the Maligne Wilderness Kitchen on the premises afterwards and thought most of the food we ordered was good.

A unique small gorge not far from Jasper townsite
This park is located on Maligne Lake Road which branches off the main highway just northeast of Jasper. The park is just over 7 miles from Jasper. The parking lot here is large but it was still challenging to find a space around 3:30 p.m. on a Monday in the summer. Maligne Canyon is unique in that it is quite narrow and very deep. It is on the order of 15 - 30 feet wide but up to 160 feet deep. Water rushes down the length of it. The trail system follows on one or both sides (at different points) with periodic bridges and overlooks. At the upper end, there is just a stream, but it quickly descends deeper. Some of the rocks at the overlooks are quite slippery (just from the tens of 1000s of shoes that have polished them over the decades). The trail looked like it descended more steeply beyond the 2nd bridge, but we didn't have time or energy to explore more at that time (this was our last hike of several that day). There is some sort of restaurant / café adjacent to the parking lot / road. I'm not sure how early they open, but they closed early (5 p.m.?) so it is more of a 'lunch all afternoon' affair. Photography is sometimes difficult here due to the depth of the canyon and the associated shadows. Noon might be a better time for photos as the light might penetrate deeper at that time and illuminate the stream better, but that's only a guess. This is definitely worth a stop, as it is close to Jasper (or a convenient stopover if you are on your way to or from Maligne Lake). A note about wildlife: We encountered traffic jams twice on the road near this park (both times involving elk). You may want to budget an extra 5 minutes into any schedule in anticipation of this. One of the area tour guides also cautioned us that the parks had instituted new and harsh fines for people who came within 100 meters of wildlife (outside of their vehicles; this is to prevent closer encounters which could cause animals to react aggressively). The fine can be $25,000! So you may want to take photos just from within your car.

    Memorable hike
I loved this hike. The whole experience was great. The canyon was stunning and the forest very pleasant. .The hike was not too strenuous, a good one for a family with an 8 year old. It was popular but that kept the bears away!

    OK
After more research when we arrived at Bridge #5 we decided to just drive to the Bridge #2-4 and then walk back to #1 and back to the parking lot. Some nice views of the canyon and waterfalls but I don't think the rest of the hikes were worth it. You have better places to be in this area for the day.
