The Yukon Transportation Museum proved to be a real treat. Being something of an aviation nerd, seeing CF-CPY outside – the retired DC-3 that is now the “world’s largest weathervane” – was the main draw and attraction, but the museum as a whole ended up being a tour de force. We took a self-guided tour and spent about an hour and a half here (could’ve easily spent more time). The story told by the artifacts on display was nothing short of phenomenal. From First Nations, snowshoe, dog sled, vehicle, bush plane, snowmobile, sternwheeler, train, and modern jet aircraft, you run the proverbial gamut while concomitantly getting a fix and feel for how these transportation methods shaped the Yukon. The images and stories paint a vivid picture – one of struggle but also of triumph as people adapt to the harsh northern climate. There were two major highlights for me: The Main Street recreation and the section of the museum that dealt with bush plane history and the evolution of flight in the Yukon. I love “old” recreations because they make one feel as though they’ve stepped back in time, immersing you in the display. Add to this the fact that you can get discounted tickets for the nearby Beringia Interpretive Centre and that makes the Yukon Transportation Museum a definite “must do” for those visiting Whitehorse!

We enjoyed this transportation museum! Check to see what days it is open before you go. First thing you see is the big plane that tells you the wind direction (DC3 weather vane). There is an inside area that takes you through the history of the transportation of the Yukon. In addition, there is an outside area where you can walk through some big vehicles.

More interesting than I thought it would be as it was equal parts history and aviation. Great main display hall and the hangar was very authentic with its vehicles in various forms. Even an outside area for the larger exhibits. Could use more interactive displays.
