For 300 years visitors have been drawn here, where rainwater runs from the fells into Aira Beck and thunders in one 65-foot leap over the falls. Yet, Aira Force is much more than an impressive waterfall. A network of trails weaves its way from Ullswater lakeshore to Gowbarrow summit, passing towering Himalayan firs, rare red squirrels, woodland glades, picnic spots and views out across Ullswater. You can start your day in Glenridding and arrive by boat, taking in the sights of Ullswater Valley along the way, then stroll back to Glenridding through Glencoyne Park and along the lakeshore. Ullswater valley is truly breathtaking, with its beautiful lake nestled amongst towering fells. The epic scenery and relative underdevelopment compared to other areas of the Lake District gives Ullswater a secluded and tranquil feel.

Lowther Castle sits a few miles south of Penrith on a limestone bluff with stunning views over the Bampton Valley. Surrounded by acres of woodland and gardens old and new, the ruined castle is a stunning place to visit for families of all sizes and ages. A stunning exhibition in the former stables sets the scene; an adventure playground in the woods is amazing for the younger visitor; the gardens are a feast for the imagination; the café offers freshly made food for all palates. Dogs on leads very welcome.

Dalemain has been the home of the Hasell-McCosh Family for eleven generations. Here, visitors can discover and enjoy a fine mixture of Mediaeval, Tudor & early Georgian architecture and Award Winning Gardens, richly planted with unusual combinations of flowers and shrubs. Highlights include the Rose Walk, Ancient Apple Trees, Tudor Knot Garden, Blue Himalayan Poppies, Earth Sculpture and Stumpery. Home to the International Marmalade Festival. Penrith Castle was begun at the end of the 14th century by Ralph Neville, who played a key role in defending this area against the Scots. It was later transformed into a luxurious residence by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who became Richard III. Surviving to their full height, the castle walls stand in a public park. Opening Times: Open in line with the surrounding parkland. 7.30am-9pm from 31 March to September, and 7.30am-4.30pm from October to 30 March. Access: Disabled visitors can access the park from Ullswater road (opposite the railway station). Paths are generally good around the park, though there are steps to access some areas of the castle. Parking: Parking is available around the town, with a few spaces at the park entrance. Facilities: There is a café within the park (not managed by English Heritage), and plenty of shops and places in Penrith, along with public toilets.

Mayburgh is a large and impressive Neolithic henge. Its banks stand up to three metres high, constructed of pebbles collected from the nearby river. Near the centre is a single standing stone. Old drawings suggest that it was one of a group here, with two more pairs standing at either entrance, but they have since been removed. Open any reasonable time during daylight hours. There is car parking available in Eamont Bridge, a short walk from the henge. Dogs on leads are welcome unless livestock is present. Brougham Castle has a small café, gift shop and toilet facilities.
