    A really good day out.
Had a lovely day walking around the grounds and loved the exhibition telling the story of the castle. The gardens are a work in progress and really worth visiting now and then again a few months later to see what else has been done. The staff in the cafe were all lovely and the food was incredible, can highly recommend you eat there.

This manor house was built in 1840 on the remains of an earlier manor home
It had over 350 rooms and some of the nicest gardens in England. In 1957, the owners demolished it by removing all the contents, windows, and the roof. It is now a dramatic ruin, with gardens within the ruins of the house. There are also gardens around the perimeter of the ruins. The property has belonged to the Lowther family since the Middle Ages.

A very interesting Castle full of history
This is a really interesting place to visit. Although most of the building appears to be a ruin, there is so much to see and it doesn’t take much to imagine how it would have been. The gardens are being restored and are such to be stunning. However we found them lovely anyway. The rose garden is well tended and the volunteers were helpful and hard at work. The cafe was delightful and had a good choice. This wa such an interesting place to visit.

    Very ambient!
It was a very cold day but we had lunch in the cafe which was warm and there was a good selection of food. I had read about Lowther in a book on castles and it was really interesting to put a face to the story. The ruins are very atmospheric and the gardens extensive, even if you're not interested in history, there is something for everyone including a large adventure playground for the urchins to let off steam!

    Really enjoyable
We made a couple of visits to Lowther Castle during our week in The Lake District. First visit we paid to go around the gardens. Still lots of 'work in progress' but still worth a visit. Would love to see it when it's all finished. Second visit was simply to walk dogs around the grounds....equally lovely. On both occasions we visited the cafe. Quite pricey but restaurant quality food - lovely.

    Visit the Cafe!!
Had lunch at the cafe. For a small place, the food was exceptional. Had the black pudding hash with poached egg and wild mushrooms - it would not have been out of place in a Michelin starred restaurant. Served on a hot plate - they clearly care! Also very friendly. Well done to the entire team.

Great day out - Cafe staff need customer care training.
Visited here twice this year and it really is a great day out. Staff are knowledgeable and the castle has so much history, it’s a really good place to visit. The women in the shop are particularly knowledgeable, welcoming, and friendly. Gardens are also beautiful particularly in the summer months. The cafe is lovely and the food is excellent quality. The first time we went the staff were fantastic. After a second visit today though, the staff just looked miserable, all of them. The older woman in particular with short grey hair was rude. She wasn’t welcoming at all and rolled her eyes at customers. One elderly customer put her tray on a clean table, the waitress shook her head and rolled her eyes. It was disappointing and didn’t make the cafe feel like the welcoming place it normally is. If waiting on staff don’t like the customer serving industry they shouldn’t work in it. At least smile and be polite. We appreciated there was a sign outside asking people to wait until they are seated, but to bark at us simply because we opened the door was unacceptable. Just rude.

    More like WOW, THE CASTLE...
This place isn't just family friendly, the whole place has been thoughtfully designed with families in mind. Brilliant for kids who enjoy a bit of exploring, even if they can't walk that far. And the Lost Castle playground is the biggest and best we have ever seen - absolutely stunning. The café is great too. We came in the middle of December - the weather was against us but we loved the feeling of having the place to ourselves!

    Magical place
So enjoyed our visit. Ruins are always fascinating to explore - then there were interesting gardens as well as views over surrounding countryside. Always good to look up when viewing architecture and this place ticked almost all the boxes. Nice tea room as well!

    Lowther castle review
We absolutely loved our morning at Lowther Castle. We didn’t realise when booking that it was castle ruins. However we still enjoyed looking around the ruins. We did the Easter egg hunt around the gardens. We loved the rock garden, we were hoping to see some red squirrels however it wasn’t our lucky day. My daughter enjoyed the lost castle playground. We had a lovely hot chocolate on the way out. My daughter’s favourite hot chocolate she has ever had… apparently. We definitely want to return once the flowers are all out.

  • Aira Force Waterfall Hotels
For 300 years visitors have been drawn here, where rainwater runs from the fells into Aira Beck and thunders in one 65-foot leap over the falls. Yet, Aira Force is much more than an impressive waterfall. A network of trails weaves its way from Ullswater lakeshore to Gowbarrow summit, passing towering Himalayan firs, rare red squirrels, woodland glades, picnic spots and views out across Ullswater. You can start your day in Glenridding and arrive by boat, taking in the sights of Ullswater Valley along the way, then stroll back to Glenridding through Glencoyne Park and along the lakeshore. Ullswater valley is truly breathtaking, with its beautiful lake nestled amongst towering fells. The epic scenery and relative underdevelopment compared to other areas of the Lake District gives Ullswater a secluded and tranquil feel.
