Hotels near Aira Force Waterfall

For 300 years visitors have been drawn here, where rainwater runs from the fells into Aira Beck and thunders in one 65-foot leap over the falls. Yet, Aira Force is much more than an impressive waterfall. A network of trails weaves its way from Ullswater lakeshore to Gowbarrow summit, passing towering Himalayan firs, rare red squirrels, woodland glades, picnic spots and views out across Ullswater. You can start your day in Glenridding and arrive by boat, taking in the sights of Ullswater Valley along the way, then stroll back to Glenridding through Glencoyne Park and along the lakeshore. Ullswater valley is truly breathtaking, with its beautiful lake nestled amongst towering fells. The epic scenery and relative underdevelopment compared to other areas of the Lake District gives Ullswater a secluded and tranquil feel.

    Beautiful falls by Ullswater
One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Lake District, this is an easy 45 minute circular walk (you can criss corss several times en route). Ample paid parking at the NT managed lot – not exactly cheap at £6. The machine only takes coins, but the helpful NT staff at the onsite office are happy to issue a parking tag against your credit card. It’s a relatively easy path, with regular signage. There are a number of other trails originating from the NT centre, if you have the time including Gowbarrow Fell.

    Busy but for good reason!
This place is a great day out with plenty to see and perhaps I saw it at its best in autumn. It's easy to get to and the various routes around the property are well sign-posted. There's also a small visitor's centre with very helpful staff, one of which (unfortunately I didn't get his name) kindly offered to attract birds to the feeder so I could film them. There are sections which are fairly steep, or require steps but, considering the environment, its reasonably accessible and well maintained. There's definitely something for everyone, from small children (there was a pumpkin trail when I visited) to serious hikers (numerous routes, some of which join up with hikes around the surrounding mountains). Benches are frequent too so you can just stop to rest, have a snack or simply or take it all in. I went in October during a school half-term weekend and the weather wasn't the best but it was still busy, however, there are at least three car parks around the property to deal with this (I parked in the main car park which had a toilet block, café, ice cream truck and visitors centre). All the various routes help to avoid congestion as well although there will still be the few locations you'll have to wait to take your photos, like Aira Force itself. I would definitely go again for the spectacular scenery and views of Ullswater but also to try another of the many routes and paths around the property and local area.

    Good day out walking
We went out as 2 families with 2 teens. Few parking points surround this. Some short and long treks. Was good fun. If going in winter months suggest water proofs and trekking or waterproof shoes. Didn’t see and red squirrels though. Overall a good experience

    Absolutely beautiful spot
I visited here with my boyfriend and dog earlier this year in the summer and it did not disappoint! There was an informative hit that supplied us with all the walking routes to the waterfall. We were also provided with a map to get to the waterfall, it was easy to follow and the walk was pleasant through the fields and trees along the river. The dog enjoyed his walk! The waterfall itself was breathtaking and there was a viewing platform with a fence and steps so would be safe for children. The walk itself wasn’t too steep and was quite comfortable to walk. At the car park site there’s also a lovely cafe.

    Spectacular Falls from all angles
It's a long time since we visited here in the winter. After all the storms and snow melting we saw that Ullswater was high. However, the falls at Aira Force were spectacular and falling with such volume and force that there was a mist. Even better, the paths weren't busy which they always are in the summer.

Lovely walk up to Gowbarrow Fell. But do it the opposite way
Great walk, followed the national trust directions, although should have look beforehand and completed the walk in the opposite direction! Beautiful walk by the side of the waterfalls, followed by a quite steep and muddy walk to the top of Gowbarrow Fell. The walk back down was very level, and not at an incline like the opposite side. If you’re wanting to walk up to Gowbarrow Fell I’d recommend going the opposite way so take it easy up, then it would be a steep walk down but you would finish at the waterfall.

Good scenic walk not too strenuous
Free admission although costs £6 for a 2hr parking bay. This is sufficient time to walk to the top of the waterfall. Although is hilly with steps isn’t unduly strenuous & our 3 yr old grandson comfortably completed it. Good view of the waterfall & although was relatively quiet as we were mid week mid morning would be a different proposition if busy as the paths can be narrow. We seen a red squirrel en route. Small cafe also st the end if required.

A pleasant walk to impressive falls.
The car park for the falls is by the main road as you drive down the shore road of Ullswater and is well signposted. There is no charge to visit the falls but car parking costs apply. NT members can park for free but must scan their membership cards at one of the payment machines. As members of the Scottish NT probably know, our cards don’t scan, so simply leave your membership card on the dashboard of your card, showing membership details and date of expiry. The walk up to the falls is through pleasant woodland and although there are a couple of steepish flights of stairs, the walk isn’t taxing. The views from the top are excellent then we walked down to the lower bridge then returned to the car park down the other side of the stream. Back at the car park there is a very nice tea shop.

    Fab morning out
Love this walk. Get there early and miss the crowds. We arrived at 9.15 and hardly saw a soul but by the time we were leaving it was packed and the car park was crazy! Have to laugh at some of the reviews complaining about it being busy and full of people when the reviewer id also part of that 😂 go and embrace the madness and the beauty of the walk

What a spectacular spot in the woods.
What a gorgeous spot. We caught the boat from Glenridding which is a lovely way to arrive. There’s a gentle walk through the beautiful woods and the thunder of the falls starts to come into earshot. Easily do-able for a set of little-ish legs and some older ones too! Tearoom and toilets at the bottom near the car park.
