A great experience in the heart of Newcastle. Our guides, both volunteers, were excellent - a champion blend of information, humour and warmth - they led a chorus of Happy Birthday for me in the tunnel area with the best acoustics! Sorry guys, we've forgotten your names, but hopefully this review will make up for it! Worth noting that parking was very good too (but note this was a Monday lunchtime in February). Would recommend the Arches parking at Stepney Bank - literally a five minute walk to the assembly point and very cheap - less than a fiver for 4 hours.
Thank you for the review, Alastair! I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed the tour.

We booked our team of architects and engineers onto a tour of the Victoria Tunnel and would highly recommend it - for work or pleasure. Our guide was John and he was excellent. Full of historical facts and stories which he made even more interesting with his dramatic effects and Geordie humour. We went on the 2 hour tour and there was plenty to keep us interested with tales of Victorian Waggonways through to World War ll air raids.
Thank you for the review, we're very glad to hear you enjoyed the tour!

This was not your usual historical tour. Instead, it was 75 minutes of pure entertainment packed with historical facts, wonder, and Geordie humour brilliantly conveyed in a non-stop performance from our two guides Mike and Andrew. Stories from the 1830s, when the idea of the tunnel was born, through its construction, use in the coal industry, demise and re-birth as a WWII air raid shelter were elaborated with a constant flow of facts to illustrate and contextualise the ingenuity and challenges of the times. Looking back, I feel that I have experienced a history tour and stage play concurrently. Well done chaps!
Thank you for the review! I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed yourself!

Really great tour with Trevor and Emily. It was really well paced and he brought the history to life really well it didn't feel like a succession of facts but stories woven together so the time just flew by. Really recommend it to anyone especially if you're from the area it's quite an amazing story and makes you feel really connected back to the area and the history.
Thank you for your review, we're glad to hear you enjoyed your tour with Trev and Emily!

Our guides for the tour were Pete and Andrew, who not only made the tour interesting but also very funny as well. I booked the tour for my wife's birthday as a surprise,as she loves historical things, and she wasn't left disappointed. It's a birthday that she won't forget, as the whole tour group sang happy birthday to her 55 feet underground. Our tour guides were extremely knowledgeable, and got everyone fully engrossed in the whole experience from start to finish. I've lived in Newcastle for 62 years and only found out about the tunnel a few years ago when my wife said she'd love to go in the tunnel, and learn about it's history.I wish we'd done it years ago and would recommend that everyone goes to visit at least once. The funds from visits will keep the tunnel open,as it's an important part of our local history that needs to be protected and looked after for future generations. A Big thank you to Pete and Andrew for today as your volunteering means a lot, and we really appreciate what a wonderful job you do for the city of Newcastle.
Wow! What a great review. I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed the tour. I will pass on your kind comments to Pete and Andrew.

John and Graham are fantastic tour guides, they are extremely knowledgeable and have a great sense of humour. We loved our visit, and would highly recommend the 2 hour tour - it flys by! The tunnel itself is a little gem, and a must visit for people who are in the area as it’s got many great stories. The hard hats are easily adjusted for comfort and the torches are great fun in addition to being a practical safety feature. I loved using my torch to look closer at the detailed markings on the tunnel. Make sure you wear comfortable footwear and clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, such as a waterproof jacket and boots.
Thanks for your review Hannah, we're glad to hear you enjoyed your tour with John and Graham!

Had a great tour with Mal and Bev (sorry if I got the names wrong!). We had the first hour focussed on WW2 history in the tunnel and the second on the history of building the tunnel. Both guides were informative and really knew their stuff but was able to talk about it in such a way that made it fun! Would highly recommend if you are in the Newcastle area

Our youth group recently had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Victorian Tunnels in Newcastle, guided by the wonderful Trish, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience! Right from the start, Trish set the perfect tone with her warm welcome and contagious enthusiasm. Her knowledge of the tunnels' history was remarkable—she had a knack for sharing fascinating facts and spooky stories that kept everyone hooked, even the teenagers! Trish masterfully balanced fun and education, making sure the group was engaged and entertained while also learning about Newcastle's rich industrial past. She had a way of making history come alive, explaining the tunnels’ use during World War II and Newcastle’s Victorian coal transportation in a way that sparked the kids' imaginations. They loved picturing what life was like back then! The tour was interactive and perfectly paced, with Trish pointing out quirky details that made us laugh and feel more connected to the space. She even organized a few moments where the kids could experience the darkness of the tunnels as they would have been—total silence and all! It was thrilling without being too scary, and the youth loved it. If you’re considering the Victorian Tunnels tour, Trish is the guide to ask for! Her passion, humor, and kindness made our visit unforgettable. She made history feel accessible and fun, creating a memorable experience for our group that left us talking about it all the way home. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an engaging and informative tour with a wonderful guide!
Thank you for the lovely review, we're so glad you enjoyed your trip to the tunnels and your tour with Trish

I visited the tunnel with my grandchildren aged 9 and 11. We did the shorter tour of 1 and 1/4 hours. Our guide was Pete and he was the most enthusiastic volunteer I have ever met.........he thoroughly enjoyed his role as guide and put his heart and soul into his job. The grandkids hung on his every word and he was very patient and kind with them. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Tunnel and we will return for the 2 hour trip, walking further in. Loved it 👍
