Our cruise took us to Edinburgh in August. We were dropped off at 7:30 on a bus that got us into the city by 830, so early enough to wander the city as it was waking up. Travelers who want to see a grand city like Edinburgh should avoid it in August during their Fringe Festivals, which bring hordes of people in search of fun times that can impede easy access to the city. We would go back to Edinburgh another quieter time when we could get into the castle and the Palace. We could not get to Victoria Street or the Grass Market due to crowds. Of all our ports throughout Ireland, Scotland and England, Edinburgh involved the most walking and stairs. Fun city to explore but without the crowds.

As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do…you have to go to the Royal Mile to see the busy tourist section of Edinburgh. If you go in August be warned that there is a month of festivals (Edinburgh International Festival) that increase the tourist population dramatically. Fortunately for us, we went in late July! We were told that one of the highlights is at the stadium built just at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle where the Scottish Royal Military Tattoo does nightly bagpipe shows. We missed this unfortunately, but do a quick google search and you will see it is totally worth it. Otherwise, the Royal Mile is what you expect, lots of shops and cafes and tourists!

If you're coming from another city, you can buy a railcard. Most locals use the Oyster card, but I bought my railcard from Trainpal. Although it's a bit more of a hassle, it's much cheaper. You can get a 20% discount on Trainpal by entering RC777E. It's a great deal, so why not take advantage of it?

So much to see in this area. This runs from Edinburgh castle on one end to the Palace of Holyroodhouse on the other. This is the main tourist area of Edinburgh. Part of it is closed to traffic. It is cobblestone and has lots of pubs, restaurants and shops selling souvenirs , jewellery and wools etc. This area can be quite busy and would suggest you book the restaurants if it is a busy time of year . At the intersection near Edinburgh castle there was a busker , dressed in full Scottish attire and played the bagpipes. He was good and drew quite a crowd, don't forget to drop some coins . He takes requests. There is at least one beautiful cathedral ,St. Giles' Cathedral , which has the top lit at night. It is beautiful inside . Don't miss the oldest pub , the Ensign Ewart.

Edinburgh is a very busy city with a lot of one way streets if driving within the centre of town, walking within the old town limited is recommended, or take the hop on hop off sightseeing bus which is ideal. The Royal mile is well worth the walk up the hill to the Castle from Holyrood Palace, but I suggest you should walk down hill from the Edinburgh Castle and take in the sights of the many quaint shops and Churches within the street. The street is cobblestone so wear suitable shoes.

Must-do if you're visiting Edinburgh. The Royal Mile takes you from Edinburgh Castle - historical fortress overlooking the city with dominance - to Holyrood parliament and Holyrood Castle - again, two significant places based on the Royal family over the centuries and the Scottish parliament. The Mile is lined with restaurants, cafés, museums and shops portraying typical themes, styles and tastes of Scottish traditions. Currently the castle has now access to the public as it's being prepared for the Edinburgh tattoo. Views from the start and finish of the Mile are excellent. Worth a visit - though typically full of tourists from around the world.

Very charming old town area of Edinburgh. So much history and so much to see. It was crowded even on a rainy Wednesday in May. Be prepared for a lot of people. Make lunch or dinner reservations if you want to be prepared.

It is termed the Royal Mile because the Edinburgh Castle is at one end and Holyrood Palace is at the other. Of course it is a mile in length [a bit more really]. It is filled with shops, pubs, and restaurants of all kinds. It is a pedestrian street and the center point of things happening. While there the Fringe festival was happening with the street filled with all sorts of entertainers. It also has important buildings such as St. Giles Cathedral, the home church of the Church of Scotland. Don’t miss that either. We were on it several days as it was centrally located.

Taking this tour is not to be missed, the street connects the 2 castles with many pedestrians. However, cars and trucks pass by. You find everything, shops, pubs, St. Giles Cathedral, alleys, places to eat and urban artists, ahhh and whiskey shops, you can still find the occasional historical place. Street is part of Edinburgh perhaps besides Victoria Street perhaps the most visited.
