    Free fun experience
Didn’t realize how big the museum was, fantastic selection of artifacts and interactive games. The observation deck was great to see more views of the city. Sadly we ran out of time to explore every floor but throughly enjoyed our few hours there.

Good family destination in Edinburgh- free!
Interesting and varied museum with lots of interactive elements for children, and grown up children alike. Well worth a walk around. We came twice and spent probably an hour/90 mins on both visits going around different areas. The cafe had a nice selection of cakes but was very expensive and had too little seating.

    A must see National Treasure.
National Treasures I simply cannot put into words how much my wife and myself enjoyed the visit to the Scottish National Museum. From the moment we entered this prestigious building we were simply in awe of the magnificent displays, and the creativity and commitment to present them in the best possible way. This is a labyrinth of discovery, and simply left us humbled by the efforts made to display not only Scotlands heritage, but the wonders of mankind and the genius that is sometimes forgotten in when overshadowed by man’s indiscretions to his fellow man through the ages. This place simply has it all, and to be given the chance to see it all for FREE, certainly puts paid to the myth of the Scottish people being careful about money. The building, the exhibits, the cafe, and the wonderful staff make this a “MUST SEE” attraction. I suggest you leave aside a minimum of 4-5 hours to give yourself an opportunity to at least skim the surface of this phenomenal museum. All involved, take a bow.

    Pleasantly surprised!
We went as had a little bit of free time and was very impressed! It was quite busy but had some really interesting sections. There was a good balance between what was interactive and what was more adult oriented. We followed the trail of highlights as was tight on time and really enjoyed it! Would definitely visit again for longer

    Very appealing design and information
The museum is very large and you don't expect it to be that bright and airy. The building from the outside seems dark and monumental. But inside it is mostly spacious. You can spend hours in browsing the rooms and themes. Don't forget to visit the roof terrace. Admission is free, a donation is suggested and is recommended to everyone.

The free 1 hour guided tour was excellent.
The free 1 hour guided tour was excellent. Our guide, Odile, was brilliant, showing us the best features of the museum history and architecture, as well as a comprehensive overview of Scotland's history up to Mary Queen of Scots. We have been to the museum before but never got this much out of it. We will try to go back for the second half of the tour when we can. Highly recommended

  • Surgeons' Hall Museums Hotels
Surgeons' Hall Museums is an award winning Museum that is home to one of the largest and most historic pathology collections in the United Kingdom. Surgeons’ Hall Museums reopened in 2015 after a major £4.4 million Heritage Lottery Funded redevelopment project. As one of the oldest Museums in Scotland, the collections grew from 1699 after 'natural and artificial curiosities' were publically sought. In the 1800s, the Museums expanded to include the remarkable collections of Sir Charles Bell and John Barclay, with the Playfair Building opening in 1832 to house these. Whilst the Museums were initially established as a medical teaching resource, all are now welcome to visit. The Museums are currently home to an extensive collection of pathology, anatomy and medical ephemera.

  • Museum of Childhood Hotels
Adults can indulge in a nostalgia-fest and children discover how their (not so) aged parents amused themselves as youngsters in a world before video games. There’s a wholesomeness to the construction kits and embroidery sets that once kept little fingers busy in a world that embraced the notion of "Improving Sunday Toys," while train sets and dolls houses have enduring appeal. If the implacable stare of the massed ranks of a compendious collection of dolls becomes a little unnerving, there are dressing-up boxes, and regular organized activities to provide diversions.
