Hotels near St Andrews Links

Recognised the world over as the Home of Golf, St Andrews Links has borne witness to over 600 years of golfing history. That the game evolved and developed into its final form here has never been in question. Golf has been played on the famous Links since as early as the 1400s, and it was here in 1764, when the 22 hole Old Course was reduced, that today's 18-hole round was established, becoming the standard for golf courses the world over. One golf course has now become seven, and many of golf's most dramatic moments have occurred here. The Links has played host to the game's greats as well as those enthusiastic amateurs for whom the chance to play St Andrews' hallowed turf is a dream come true. As well as seven courses, the Links also manages four shops, three clubhouses and a Golf Academy - all open for the public to enjoy.

Fantastic experience playing the Old, New and Jubilee courses, which were immaculate, even in winter. A privilege to play on these historical links. The winter deal, which you can apply for in late spring each year (for the following winter), offers great value if you’re prepared to give the weather a chance, and we were well rewarded.

Although I didn’t have the chance to play golf, I enjoyed a peaceful walk around the perimeter of St Andrews Links during sunset, and it was absolutely breath-taking. The vast, well-manicured greens combined with the stunning coastal views create a serene and picturesque atmosphere. Watching the sun dip below the horizon over the iconic course was a memorable experience, and it gave me a real appreciation for the beauty and history of this world-renowned golf destination. Highly recommend a visit, even if you're not a golfer!

We came to Scotland with a few tee times lined up and hoping to get on the Old Course. We did the 48 hour ballot in Open week and were amongst the lucky few. We warmed up at the driving range behind the Old Course hotel and walked over for our afternoon tee time. It was a bit windy and overcast with the temperature around 16 C (64F). All three of us had veteran caddies. The course does not offer a junior rate and verifies your handicap before the start (HCP of 36 or lower). We got a green reading book and some nice memorabilia before teeing off. The tee shot on the first hole is a nervous one despite the wide fairway. Some fun facts: Left miss is often better than right miss. There is out-of-bounds right on a few holes. There are only two Par 3s (holes 8 and 11). Quite a few blind shots on the front nine. There is a good crowd watching on holes 17 and 18, but a critical one. No applause if you don’t hit it well on your approach. The course was winning towards the end. We had a fun grouping and enjoyed every minute of the round. The turf is special, and it feels so calm and quiet on the course. No car noises, houses or golf carts. Pure solitude. We had some memorable crazy long putts and made a few birdies. You usually play from 6380 yards. After the round we had dinner at 18 at the Rusack’s which was delicious. Thank you Old Course for the wonderful memories. And remember Sunday the course is closed for play and open for the public to stroll on or have a picnic.

I visited St Andrews in July and played the Old Course. It can be difficult to get a tee time for the Old Course as, other than purchasing an expensive Golf Package, all tee time are subject to The Ballot (or lottery drawing). There are ways to improve your odds of getting picked for a tee time, all of which can be found by visiting my web site at budgetgolftriptips.com. You will also find some great recommendations for hotels and restaurants in St Andrews.

Got lucky in the Advance Ballot and got a tee time for the Old Course. The gloomy weather and light drizzle didn’t detract from the experience! The golf was great, treading the course where the pros have played. A caddie is recommended as there are many blind shots where it is not obvious where you have to aim for. And they are the best gauge of whether the ball is still playable where you hit it. With the amount of rounds played, the fairways were a bit divot marked in areas, but greens were well-kept and bunkers well-raked (😉). Overall a great experience!

Organised a surprise Links Tour & lunch at Tom Morris Bar & Grill for Fiancés Birthday, he was rapted. For a golf enthusiast he was in his element, Tour was fantastic. Brilliant walk around with guide who was so interesting & informative. Lunch was very hearty. Delicious. Service brilliant. Definitely well worth it.

Wasn’t able to book a round (the wait is a month out at least) but to just walk the course and see where it all started is really something. You can always find someone who’s hit it off the course while you’re there. So always be kind and cheer them on! You know you’ve been there!

  • St Andrews Cathedral Hotels
Please be aware there are a number of access restrictions in place at the cathedral at the moment. We know that this will be disappointing for visitors, but we are maintaining access where we can. Due to essential maintenance, St Rule's Tower is currently closed (anticipated reopening spring 2024). Sections of the graveyard are fenced off due to unstable gravestones. The remains of St Andrews Cathedral, which was Scotland’s largest cathedral and most magnificent church, show how impressive it used to be. The museum houses an outstanding collection of early and later medieval sculptures and other relics found on the site, including the magnificent St Andrews Sarcophagus of Pictish date. The precinct walls are particularly well preserved. St Rule's Tower, in the precinct, is part of the first church of the Augustinian canons at St Andrews built in the early 12th century. There are splendid views from the top.

  • St Andrews Castle Hotels
St Andrews Castle is the ruins of the castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews, dating in part from the 13th century. On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the city's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews and the focal point of the church in medieval Scotland. Explore the underground 16th-century siege mine and counter-mine, and the 'bottle dungeon', one of the most infamous castle prisons in medieval Britain, which was cut out of the solid rock. John Knox and George Wishart may have been imprisoned in this dank and airless space, and this is where its believed Cardinal Beaton’s body was kept when he was murdered in 1546.

  • The Swilcan Bridge Hotels
The famous Swilcan Bridge on the 18th hole of the Old Course at the Home of Golf. The bridge was originally built over 700 years ago so shepherds could move their flock across the Swilcan Burn which meanders through what is now the 1st and 18th fairways. Today the Swilcan Bridge, with the 'Auld Grey Toun' providing the most beautiful of backdrops, is one of the most iconic settings in golf. So much more than a little stone crossing, the Swilcan Bridge is the history of the game, it's the magic moments, it's felt the footsteps of the true greats.
