Hotels near Memorial of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of German division, located in the middle of the capital. Situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, it extends along 1.4 kilometers of the former border strip. The memorial contains the last piece of Berlin Wall with the preserved grounds behind it and is thus able to convey an impression of how the border fortifications developed until the end of the 1980s. The events that took place here together with the preserved historical remnants and traces of border obstacles on display help to make the history of Germany's division comprehensible to visitors. The memorial is part of the Berlin Wall Foundation, which also includes the Marienfelde Refugee Center Museum, the central site dedicated to the history of flight and emigration in divided Germany. MOBILE TOURGUIDE Visitors to the Berlin Wall Memorial who have a smartphone or a tablet computer with internet access at their disposal have the opportunity to select an individual tour of the memorial grounds for themselves on the memorial's mobile website berliner-mauer.mobi.

    An excellent memorial
You have to see this memorial. It's a thought provoking guide through an important moment of history. From the wall itself to the watchtowers and the tiny plaques commemorating escape plots. It's incredible. Get the metro to Bernhauser Strabe and then the tram back from the Nordbahnhof

A moving piece of Berlin history
This was our second visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial, but this time we had and took more time to immerse ourselves in the history of the Berlin Wall. The photos, personal testimonies... show the impact on the residents during the separation, the protest and the fall of the Berlin Wall. The documentation center is free to visit, offers you a view over the former border area and takes you into personal stories from that time. The open-air exhibition is very serene and respectful to the victims. You appreciate connection and freedom of movement all the more. It is more than worth a visit, take enough time. Next time we will bring our children, because it is also very accessible for families with children! We come back!

Emotional when taken in as part of a historical tour and background understanding
Was part of a Cold War tour we took with ‘Inside Tours’ and trying to understand the emotions people went through from both East and West perspective brings the history alive. A sad history for many but also a safe haven for others who then suffered when the wall fell. A very moving experience and recommend get a good guide to help provide the differing perspectives and modern day reflections (thanks Glen)

The real wall as we were looking for it, the museum is great
Of all the sectors visited on the Wall this is the one we preferred... In this place we can really "touch" the wall as it was, the museum which is nearby gives us a beautiful perspective, visual and strong illustrated by very interesting documents! Unfortunately a little out of the way but easily accessible by tram or Ubahn

A must do and see experience..and it is free!
This was one of the most moving memorials I ever visited and the museum next door one of the most memorable . Historical and very educating. I applaud Germany for owning and educating their children and the world about their history. I found Germany to be a welcoming, fun and historical country to visit!

    Understanding history as a family
The Berlin Wall Memorial is a powerful and accessible way to learn about the division of Berlin and its eventual reunification. We found the mix of preserved wall segments, open-air exhibits, and the Documentation Center to be very engaging. The stories of escape attempts and the impact on families were particularly moving. Even our young children were able to grasp the basic concepts due to the visual nature of the site. While some content is sobering, it's an important place to visit – a reminder of the cost of division and the triumph of the human spirit.

Worth a visit and it’s free!
Visited today, arrived or Nordbahnof, this itself is a very interesting place. The photos around show you how the station was sealed off along with lots to read. Across the road is the memorial, you can stand in the middle of the walls. Lots of information as you walk around, then across the road is the viewing tower and exhibition, you can go up to the 5th floor to look over with the watch tower. Lots of photos and information inside. Further down the road is the gift/bookshop with interesting books in all languages including ones for children which explain it. Can’t believe there is no charge either. Well worth a visit which is full of information and makes you realise how the wall divided people including through the cemetery.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Berlin Wall - and it's free
Very informative. You start out at the Visitor's Center, Bernauerstrasse 111, where they show two films. one is about the history of the Berlin Wall, the second film that starts a few minutes after the first, tells about all the fortifications and defense that the Soviets built. A number of people left after the first film was over, so if you visit, wait a few minutes for the second one to start! Films are in German and English - the staff at the front desk will tell you what times the English version begins. After this, you cross the street to see wall remnants, memorial items, and other displays along the street where the wall used to be. Then back across the street to the Documentation Center at 119 Bernauerstr. More interesting displays and recorded accounts. You can go up to a tower where you can look out over the wall and see a remaining watch tower.

    A thought provoking landmark.
The Berlin Wall in Bernauer Straße is a must visit destination for anyone interested in post WW 2 history. The height of the wall is surprising and as planned a major obstacle for a person trying to get to West Berlin. The museum is also excellent.
