There are no words to describe Parthenon. It is not understood that a person has visited Athens and has not passed through the Acropolis. Without exaggeration, the greatest building ever built, man. For the visit you will need comfortable shoes, water and good sunscreen protection such as a hat and sunscreen. Prioritize the early hours of the morning to have time to navigate with your pass but also to avoid the excessive heat of the summer. Ideal seasons for a spring and autumn visit as the sun does not land.

Not much needs to be said about the site. It's simply amazing. We went in late September so make sure you check closing time as it changes as winter comes on. I would recommend the Acropolis museum first and then do the Parthenon itself. We had a 5 PM timeslot which was perfect as the 6 PM doesn't give you enough time and it gets slammed by people later looking for sunset pics. Would also recommend starting at the south east gate and ending your time at the main gate. This gate leads you to the Parthenon eventually and has shorter queues. A lot of money pours in here, it would be great if facilities and walkways were better.

They came to this paradise about 3 years ago with a group of friends. We came here because we love Greek art and above all because we did the classic and I wanted to see this masterpiece with our own eyes. Well there is not much to say beyond that it is an unforgettable and precious piece of history. I only recommend not to come in the summer because it is too hot.

The Parthenon and the surrounding areas in the Acropolis were beautiful, and literally took our breath away when we first saw it from Monastiraki. Best to experience it with an audio guide for more background and context of the history behind the ruins Do go early and wear good shoes - we went up at 8am in October and the crowds were manageable, we could still take photos of the ruins and monuments without people in the frame. As we were leaving around 11am there were huge tour groups and the steps leading up to the Parthenon were filled with people

Fabulous site! Book your tickets online and try and go as early as possible. It’s easily walkable from Monastiraki square/Metro, allow 30 minutes to wander up the hill stopping for coffee/snacks on the way. The building bring history to life and show how it was 2,500 years ago. Just imagine how much Athens has grown. They are doing literally amazing work to preserve, curate and strengthen the ancient buildings - but it will take a long time, during which there will be signs of work! Views are incredible. Everything is accessible. Wear comfortable shoes. Take 1 litre of water each, plus snacks.

So exciting! It is amazing to be able to approach this very old and beautiful construction. You see it from many places! I recommend reading the story previously, of what its use was over time. There is also an information poster. We could be almost alone in many moments, I think that pleasure was thanks to it being winter but also because we arrived early. It would be good if winter hours were here: 8 am to 5 pm. At 9 o’clock groups started arriving and at 10 o’clock in this area it was already like an anthill and they had to wait to be able to enter those who were in guided groups. Groups of children who are seen to have been going through school also began to arrive. Luckily we did well going straight in the first hour and in the rest of the time (we were three hours walking in the acropolis) we did the rest that many overlook for going to this area.

There's not much I can add about the Parthenon that hasn't already been said, what I will say is though that it is 100% worth going to see. The ancient temple of Athena may not be at it's best these days compared to it's glorious past but it is still magnificent. Ticket prices are reasonable at €26.50 each for the 6pm entry slot, actually all of Greece has reasonable prices for it's monuments/museums something other country could look at. The temple is truly wonderful a true testament to the adoration the ancient Greeks had for the goddess Athena.

The largest and most iconic structure of the Acropolis complex is one of the three or four images that are associated with a city and recognizable worldwide. As a kid growing up, I associated the Leaning Tower and the Coliseum with Italy, Big Ben with Great Britain, the Eiffel Tower with France, and the Acropolis and Pantheon with Greece. We've been to Athens several times, but it seems like the trip would be incomplete without touring it again. The climb is pretty steep but not impossible, even for someone my age (mid-70s). There are generally so many people trying to jostle their way to the top that you are climbing pretty slowly. Wear good walking shoes and book your tickets online in advance for an early morning visit. Also, watch your step. Once you get to the top, it is relatively easy to walk around and explore the ruins, but in some spots the marble surface is worn very slick. On sunny days (we were last there on a hot day in July with grandkids) bring some water and wear a cap or hat. We didn’t use a tour guide, but we did use Rick Steves’ audio guide, which you can download on your phone. It's free and very informative. Currently the Parthenon is covered in heavy scaffolding undergoing renovation work, but you can still see and appreciate the history and the amazing work that went into building it. Sitting up on the rocky hill above the city, the ruins also create a stunning display at night when the site is lit. We once spent a week in an apartment in the Plaka with a balcony that looked out on the whole complex, and at night you could just sit with a glass of wine and stare in awe. Knowing that it is 2,500 years old makes both the size and intricacy of the architecture impressive. The former temple was built in the 5th century BC and dedicated to Athena the goddess of war after victory over the Persian Empire during the Greco-Persian Wars. Going full circle, in the 6th century AD, it was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and after the Ottoman conquest in the mid-15th century, it was a mosque. If you are physically able, taking the climb up the rocky hill to explore the Parthenon is definitely worth the effort. If not, wait until night and find a restaurant with a good view. I recommend the Strofi Athenian Restaurant. It will be difficult to look away and eat. (PaM)

What an amazing place. We visited with a guide booked through Get Your Guide in the U.K before we travelled. Our guide Nicos was excellent. He had lots of information about the Parthenon and the Acropolis Hill and was friendly and funny. We also did a tour of the museum with him which was great. It was very hot with some shady spots but not many. The climb up wasn’t so awful as we had many spots to stop at along the way. We would highly recommend a visit to this momunental structure of such importance and history. We visited at 9 in the morning, It was very busy but not overcrowded. Queues for tickets were reasonably small. There are toilets at the bottom and a vending machine should you forget to bring water. It closes before sunset. Great views at the top.

One off the bucket list and totally lived up to expectations. So we took a quick trip to Athens to use up holiday owed...why Athens..to see the Parthenon of course and it was AMAZING. We did not book in advance as we were told as my partner has disabilities we should go to the booking office. We thought it would be good to go in the morning..err the queue was round the block and more...no way were we going to wait in that line so off we went to explore and do other things. A couple of days later back in the neighbourhood we walked past late afternoon and no queue, so we go to the desk and ask to buy tickets explain he has a disability and it is FREE not only for him but also for me as his carer, we were also offered to use the lift up the side of the acropolis but as he can walk decided not to take up that offer and were glad we walked as there was so much to see on the way up. Yes it was still busy but not so busy that we could not explore, read the information and see the amazing work that went into building this place. If you stepped over the rails one of the staff would blow a whistle (we stayed where we should but others chanced it) We spent a couple of hours taking in the amazing history of this place, yep there is currently scaffolding up but you can still see the majesty of this place and appreciate just how talented the builders were. You can see the amazing Heridion arena (sadly no Foo Fighters concert while we were there) and your ticket also gives access to the Theatre of Dionysus where the first ever Greek dramas were peformed. If you appreciate history this is a must see place to visit, just pick your time carefully to get the best experience

For the best experience, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and for fewer crowds. – Tripadvisor

  • Panathenaic Stadium Hotels
The Panathenaic Stadium dates back to the 4th century B.C. and was the site of the first modern Olympic games in 1896 and remains the starting point of the Olympic flame torch relay. Made entirely of white marble, it's an impressive sight that's earned it the nickname Kallimarmaro or "beautiful marble". There are even a couple of hours in the morning designated for morning jogs when you run in the footsteps of former Olympians. Take a stroll up to Ardittos Hill for a panoramic view of the stadium. Tickets are required to enter the stadium, which includes a free audio guide. – Tripadvisor
