The Old Astronomical Clock in Prague is an iconic sight and absolutely worth a visit! The intricate design and historical significance make it a must-see while exploring the city. A useful tip for students: if you have a student card, make sure to bring it along! You’ll get a significant discount on the entry fee, which makes the experience even more budget-friendly. If you’re nervous about heights or find climbing difficult, I highly recommend opting for the elevator. It costs a bit extra, but it’s well worth it for a more comfortable experience. The view from the top is stunning, offering panoramic sights of Prague’s beautiful rooftops and streets, so don’t let the height deter you. Overall, it’s a fantastic experience, combining history, architecture, and breathtaking views. Just come prepared and you’ll have a great time!

The astronomical clock has adorned the Old Town Hall since 1410. It is the oldest working astronomical clock in the world. The clock was designed by Nicolaas van Kadaň based on the calculations of professor Jan Sindl. The clock consists of three parts. The first part (middle): the astronomical dial that shows the time and the position of the sun. The movement consists of three disks, the fixed disk in the center and the rotating disks on the outer edge and the zodiacal circle. There are three hands: the hand with the hand, the sun that slides back and forth on that hand and the hand with the star that is attached to the zodiac disk. The second part (above): the Parade of the Apostles. Every hour on the hour, Death (the skeleton) sounds the alarm to make it clear that another hour of your life has passed. Then the shutters open and the twelve apostles appear. This phenomenon also attracts the most tourists given the large crowds that arise just before the hour in front of the clock. The third part (below): a dial with medallions representing the months and on which the saint is indicated for each day. The oldest part of the timepiece dates from the beginning of the 15th century. However, the apostles were not added until 1865. The story goes that when the job was completed, the maker of the timepiece was blinded so that he would no longer be able to make such a timepiece for another city. The clock has stood still several times, has been restored several times and was damaged by bombs during WWII. Especially the realization that such technical ingenuity was invented centuries ago is very impressive. Then I like to take the hustle and bustle for granted.

Along with Charles Bridge, it is definitely the must-see destination of your Prague trip. The square, beautiful, frames this building. The astronomical clock is very famous and very special: at least once you wait for the hour to strike to see the tour of the statues of the apostles. I recommend the entrance to the tower (it is not particularly challenging as steps to walk and, anyway, there are two elevators) to enjoy a suggestive panoramic view of the city. Cost per family (2 adults and 1 child): 650 crowns (about 26 euros).

When you walk around the old city, the astronomical clock is a true eyecatcher. We decided to visit the old town hall and we highly recommend the guided tour. There's self guided tour: this is only to visit the tower! So we went all the way up on foot, you can buy an extra ticket to use the elevator as well. Upstairs you've got an amazing view over the city and the old town square. We also took the guided tour: here you can visit different halls within the old town hall. The guide was very pleasant and told a lot of myths and historical facts about the building and the clock. After visiting the old town hall we went down and we visited the underground as well. Here we heard some creepy tales from the past and got a nice view how prague looked like back in the days. We spent about 90min The guided tour was approx. 1h
Hello thank you for your visit and your lovely review. We are glad that you enjoyed the tour of the Old Town Hall and the climb up the tower overlooking Prague. We are also pleased that you chose the guided tour and appreciated the stories about the history and myths associated with this important building and the astronomical clock. The underground spaces really do offer a unique insight into Prague's past and we are glad that you were also intrigued by the ghost stories. We are glad that you enjoyed our guide's interpretation and that you took away a beautiful memory from the tour. We hope that you will come back soon and rediscover the charm of our city. We wish you a wonderful day. Best regards, Prague City Tourism

The Astronomical clocks hourly performance is a little underwhelming in my view but no denying its rich history and symbolism. Spoiler alert : On the hour, Death rings a bell and inverts his hourglass, and the 12 Apostles parade past the windows above the clock, nodding to the crowd. At the end, a cock crows and the hour is rung.

The history highlight of our trip. This should be your number one place to visit if you’re in old town Prague. The guided tour of the state rooms and underground gives a real insight into the history of Prague and some of the oldest and most well preserved interior rooms and art that you can see in Prague. First we had to wait in line for tickets. You can buy in advance and avoid the line. But I think we only waited 20 minutes which we didn’t mind. Once in we purchased tickets for an English speaking tour. Which gave us 30 minutes to walk up to the top of the tower and viewing area above the clock. I’d suggest you use the free lockers available for your bags and bulky coats as it’s a long climb up and very tight at the top. There is a lift option if you need it. The lift is a stunning design a reminded me a little of the Charlie in the chocolate factory lift that would take you up and out. It didn’t and we didn’t go in it. But it does look amazing. The views from the top were breathtaking taking. Looking over the city on a clear day you can see so much. A real treat after being at ground level for days to see it from above. The guided tour was great. Our guide welcomed us on the ground floor at took us through the 3 houses which make up the town hall. This history is fascinating. She was very knowledgeable and made this whole experience worth every penny. Key points on the tour - the back / insides of the astronomical clock and the apostles. - the original town hall, Dutch stove, painted walls and coats of warms. - the state room with stunning art work ceiling light domes from natural sunlight. - the underground cellars. A real interesting history of Prague to discover!

One of the signature sights in Old Town Prague is the astronomical clock in the tower of the Old Town Hall. Crowds rightly gather in the street outside to view the “show,” high up in the tower, when the clock strikes the hour. As bells chime, blue and white doors open to reveal a parade of the Apostles peering out from windows above the clock. At the same time, other figures adorning the clock tower suddenly move, including a skeleton that starts ringing a bell that it holds in its bony fingers. It’s great fun. But don’t just see the tower from the street. With an entrance ticket, one can go up into the tower’s interior (by stairs or elevator) to an observation deck, near the top, that offers magnificent views in all directions, including the great Prague Castle across the river from Old Town. Also included with the ticket is entry to the Town Hall’s historic halls, like the Old Council Hall, and its beautiful chapel. And at the top of a short staircase off the chapel, visitors can even glimpse where the Apostles gather “between shows,” behind the famous blue and white doors! There is also a gift shop at street level for those who want to purchase souvenirs to remind them of their visit. This is a wonderful place to visit — inside and out — in Old Town Prague.

Of course, due to its position on the Old Town Square, you will invariably come across this one whilst in Prague. The clock is very interesting and certainly very photogenic. However, whether it is worth joining the throngs who gather on the hour to see it chime is debatable and will depend on your experience of other astronomical clocks around the world. If you’ve never seen one before then probably worth it, but to be honest I was quite underwhelmed. Apart from a bit of movement from the skeleton and some rotating figures behind a window, not a lot else happens. Give me the one in Munich Altstadt any day of the week. We did not do the guided tour of the building, but good to see people reporting that it is well worth the money but paid the 300CZK for entry into the building and to climb the tower. There are quite a few steps but if you are capable with stairs then it’s not too challenging. Otherwise, you can pay another 100CZK to use the lift and avoid most of them.

The Old Town Hall is located in the heart of Prague’s old town, in the famous Old Town Square: I advise you to walk around this fabulous place and enjoy the beauty of the architecture. The town hall has a tall tower, thanks to which it dominates the whole Old Town Square. On the south side of the town hall tower there is a legendary astronomical clock where 12 apostles appear every hour... actually to see this performance you have to guard time, and enjoy standing in the square the performance, completely free. Today, in the historic Old Town Hall, which consists of a complex of buildings, you can visit the chapel with the mechanism of the Prague couriers, halls, dungeons and climb to the observation deck in the Town Hall Tower: here you will have to pay for admission. – Walking around Prague, it is impossible not to notice numerous shops with a range of different dolls, puppets dressed in antique costumes, (they are very expensive, by the way, so I purchased a hedgehog grandmother who laughed, bobbed hands and feet in the market). Suddenly, it dawned on me that the city itself can be compared to a puppet town (except when you go around the corner and stumble upon a modern shop).. so you want to hold this town hall and see from all angles - a magical impression. You could say that this city itself is the main attraction worth getting to know from all sides!

The Town Hall of Prague is a historic and very beautiful architectural complex. Form a set of 5 medieval houses and the building with the famous astronomical clock with more history. The watch is inserted into a massive rectangular tower, having a gothic-glassed window. Visiting the historic rooms of the City Hall is an extraordinary experience. The apartments date from different times and are richly decorated. There are guided tours in several languages with scheduled hours. It is possible to take a walk inside the clock and the view that you have of the city of Prague from above the tower is spectacular. As for the watch, which was completely destroyed during the 2nd. World War II and rebuilt after its end is a spectacle that attracts crowds hour by hour. It is one of the oldest watches in the world still operating. Its different levels show moving figures, like the apostles. The square itself is the main landmark of the old town. It is all surrounded by cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. It is worth spending a few hours walking through it and the surroundings.

The most significant square of historical Prague, it was founded in the 12th century and has been witness to many historical events. In addition to the Old Town Hall and the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the square is dominated by the Baroque Church of St Nicholas, the Rococo Kinský Palace, the Gothic House at the Stone Bell and the monument to Jan Hus.
