Watch out for scams place Jemaa el fna Henna One gives you the book with the tattoos asks you to sit down and look at it quietly and the other takes your other hand and hurries to start tattooing. Do not hesitate to stop it and stay firm.my husband told him what you do we have not even talked about the price of 20€ we go to 10€. I left with a tattoo start and I gave the 20 diram I had left , so luckily not much for nothing. She almost even went into my purse to see that I had nothing left and while discussing she wanted me to go to the vending machine... be careful they are very organized In the old town watch out for people who want to show you around the tanneries so-called free then big problem ask you 200 dirhams for 1min 30 visit and take you to the store to buy.. a real scam we left with difficulty but in front of us the folders block people to get you Minmumi 70 dirhams .. I did not like this aspect of Marrakech that is not at all present in Essaouira Otherwise the city is beautiful and in the new city the traders are much less insistent you can enter the shop without being almost forced to buy. We wanted to make room in the evening but in front of this situation we will not go too much insistence from the place of the traders of this famous square

I loved this place. I visited it day and night and it is really at night that I recommend it. it is the strategic heart of Marrakech. The departure of many visits. At night we bought freshly squeezed juices and dried fruit from merchants. There are about 40 of them and they all sell the same thing. Then we ate in one of the many gargots in the square. We chose delicious grills for less than 15€ with drinks. An old man came to play music for us. We were immersed in the atmosphere. There are plenty of stands, we went around. Many make you taste things and try to pat yourself down. I tasted boiled sheep's head. Merchants come on foot with a kind of trailer as a stall. We bought them oriental pastries. Finally, we took advantage of the many street artists: acrobats, henna tattoo artists, etc. By day, the place is less friendly. There are snake charmers who offer to take a picture but then ask for lots of money.

Most of the fresh juice stalls in the square are great, the staff are friendly and let you try before you buy and don’t try to scam you. However avoid stall no. 13 where they will try to give you juices that you haven’t ordered and give you the large size when you have asked for small. When I pointed this out to them I was told “take away size is large”, which is ridiculous given that all juices are ‘take away’ from these stalls! We walked to the stall next door which served us exactly what we asked for with no issues. Aside from this one issue with stall 13 we have enjoyed fresh juice everyday from these stalls. Our favourites were: banana, strawberry and kiwi, avocado and orange. Be adventurous and try new combinations!

Second visit this evening was great, ate a tagine each and only spent £10. Yesterday I found it a bit overwhelming and got a mouthful of foul abuse walking away from a tout who was blocking my route in a very persistent manner. We realised that the stalls mostly sell the same food at the same price so it’s best to sit down quickly to avoid the hassle. The prices seemed reasonable so yesterday when our waiter asked if we would like some starters/vegetables we said yes, BIG MISTAKE! They give you a little plate of mixed stuff and charge a completely fanciful price. This evening we just said ‘No, thank you’ and were charged for what we had ordered.

Worth 2 separate visits as daytime here is different to the night times. In the daytime, there are musicians, snake charmers, fruit sellers and other stalls all vying for your business, all the while cars and scooters are driving through the square and not on a dedicated road! At night time, the square turns into the night market which includes dozens at pop-up restaurants and cafes, more musicians, story tellers and performers. It’s an exciting, chaotic place to visit and you will probably pass through here multiple times when visiting the Souks and they start from here.

A must do tourist experience. Craziness surrounds… an eclectic and frenetic mix of men touting for business selling air pods, knock off sunglasses and belts. Women trying to get you to have henna tattoos. Pushy food stall men trying to persuade you to dine apparently ‘ it’s cheaper than Asda’ ??!!!!! Oh yes and snake charmers and monkeys….. Our Riad had said we should visit at both day and evening as the vibe is very different and they said don’t buy anything on the square. Glad I experienced the full Square ambiance! 👍🏼

You’ve probably read about this place.. so go and see it for yourself. It’s always interesting, but for the most hectic experience, go after sunset when the square becomes alive and the food vendors are out in force. There are your obligatory snake charmers who will chase after you for money the moment you glance in their direction, and men with monkeys dressed in football shirts and, bizarrely, wedding dresses, but you can avoid them, particularly if you are dubious as to the way in which the animals are treated. Some of the snakes looked very sluggish and/or dead, with only the cobra’s being willing to put on any sort of display. The square is surrounded by venues with elevated views, so if you snare one at the right time, you’ll get treated to quite the show of people, noise and smells. Not for the faint-hearted after dark, it’s a place to be experienced at least once whilst in Marrakesh.

Plenty of photo opportunities from local roof top bars - Cafe Glacier has a buy a drink and view policy and offers excellent views towards Koutoubia Mosque. Food stalls well worth the visit - full meal for two easily under £5 and so much choice. English widely spoken , French will get you by and attempts at Moroccan greatly appreciated. Avoid any one with snakes, monkeys etc... you paying them only encourages it ! Ask before taking photos of stalls or people, this is only polite. Taxi drop off hectic - we arranged collection from Bab El Ksour a few minutes walk

You have to go through the square and stroll in the souk if you go to Marrakech! I loved the lively atmosphere of the square, the colors of the souk, take a coca on a rooftop at sunset, make purchases (pottery, decor...) and negotiate them! On the negative side, we must remain vigilant because as in all major cities there can be pickpockets. But overall it is good to walk there at any time of the day or night.

Jemaa el-Fnaa is the heart of Marrakesh. If you go, you have to visit. It is vibrant, busy, and it's lovely to look at if you can get a view of it from a nearby rooftoop restaurant or café. That being said, we met multiple locals who told us prices here are quite inflated compared to the rest of Marrakesh, and that we'd be best off buying our souvenirs/food somewhere else. You also have to keep your wits about you, as there are many people and scooters around during peak evening hours. There is a cheap and cheerful place called Snack Toubkal on the edge of the square. It seemed that both locals and tourist ate here, so that is hopefully a good sign. We ate their twice on our stay. Apart from the occasional offer from vendors, we experienced no hassling at all. Just a simple no thanks or hand gesture to say no was always accepted. We did always keep our distance from the snake charmers and people with monkeys on chains however. (an unfortunate part of the square that I hope goes away one day). Overall, if you visit Marrakesh, you have to visit Jeema el-Fnaa, even if it's just once. For every 1 disingenuous snake charmer/scammer there are more than a hundred genuine lovely people in this city.
