Hotels near Basilica Cistern

Descend below the streets of Sultanahmet into this majestic underground reservoir which dates back to the 6th century. Also called the Sunken Palace, it is the largest cistern from Istanbul's Byzantine-era still standing, and something that James Bond fans might recognize from the film, 'From Russia with Love'. The underground chamber has over 336 distinctive marble and granite columns believed to have been salvaged from nearby buildings, the most famous being the two Medusa heads. Skip the lines and visit the Sunken Palace and other iconic sights like Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace on a tour of Istanbul.

We totally lucked out! Exiting from the Hagia Sophia, we were shocked to see no line at the Basilica Cistern. We quickly ran and bought tickets! Been wanting to see this since I read Dan Brown's book, Inferno.

    Wonderful History!
What an experience! Great to learn the history behind this underground reservoir. And we visited during a hot day, so, that was quite a change in temperature. However during out visit, there were some contemporary art pieces, not too sure if they belong to such a historical place.

too dark, bring a low light camera/lens
this was really nice but you need a good lowlight camera/lens to take good pics coz it's so dark. i don't get why it has to be that dark all the time. the change the lighting from yellow to green, wouldn't kill them to make it bright for at least 30 seconds every now and then. it was really hard to take pics and just made the line go extra slow coz people were finding it hard to wait for the place to be bright enough to take proper pics.

    Add to your visit list
This is a must see on your visit to Istanbul. The structure is really remarkable and is a terrific feat of engineering. It doesn’t take a long time to wander through the site but you can stop and enjoy the design and take several photos. The size of the place is impressive.

    Amazing work of engineering!
Mesmerising and stunning. The engineering achievements of 2000 years ago to supply water to the local population is mind boggling. It was like an underground cathedral with water. Beautiful arches, capitals, statues, apparently taken from pagan temples to build the cistern. Seeing is believing!

    Great place to visit
Great place to visit, very unusual. Queues can be very long so we went early morning and just bought tickets when we got there. Interesting place, lovely light changes and an art exhibition when we were there too. We spent about an hour.

BUY TICKETS AHEAD! It is really well done.
This place is worth a visit. It is very well done. There was a line around the building all day. At 5:53 PM we bought tickets on line. At 6:17 we walked past 300 people waiting to buy tickets, and directly into the cistern. The line is only to buy tickets, so if you already have them you can just go in. It was maybe 4 euro extra each. The cistern is fascinating and very well presented with light and music. We spent about 45 minutes there.

Very inspirational place and pleasant surprise
This is an experience you will not find anywhere else in the world. It was a fresh water basin to provide fresh water for the city of Istanbul. At the entrance you do not have the idea that you will enter a sort of magical world. Get tickets in advance because it can be along wait

A brilliant engineering feat providing water built during the tome of Constantinople
We opted to go early and explore on our own.It is opened from 9-5:30 daily. There were no lines when we arrived but it became very busy by 10:00a.m. The graphics gave an informative and historical summary about this Sunken Palace. They are worth reading before you start exploring. This vast underground water storage tank is very impressive not only for the time it was built but the problem solving abilities allowing Turkey to become the important post that it is. It does not take a lot of time as you are moving with the crowds but we were very impressed. Every where you look is a Kodak moment.

    Fascinating
A thorough fascinating and impressive monument that usually sports pretty long lines. Come in the afternoon for much quicker access. Observe variety of columns, the Medusa heads, and the overall space - all amazing.
