    Too many people.
This is one crowded tour - they really pack in the people, crowded onto the ferry, packed onto buses, and there were so many touring the prison that it was difficult to get close enough to the guide to hear him. I'm not sure it was worth the money and a half day. And if it's a hot day, the only respite is standing in the cool gift shop until the return ferry is ready to board.

    Don't Miss Seeing This
We booked our trip with Jarat Tours. We were told we did not need a guide as the island provided that. Jaret got our tickets and took us to the dock. We found that worthwhile as we were not sure about the area or where to go exactly. Our guide took us to the front of the ticket line and we got on the boat. Jarat was great, instead of trying to sell us a tour guide when we didn't need, they gave us honest advice that we appreciated. She was waiting for us when we returned and took us to Table Mtn. I can't say enough about having advance tickets to these very busy attractions. We boarded the boat and were taken to the island. It is a great ride with great views. The boat was full and it took about 40 minutes. The film they showed on board was informative and interesting. We then got buses to go to the prison. Very sobering to hear from an actual inmate and see the cells and facilities. We saw Mandela's cell among other interesting places around the prison. Then back on the bus to see the living quarters of staff, leper graveyard, and quarry. Back to the dock for the ride back to the dock. This is a must do for sure. The view of the island is really something to see.

Worthwhile but spoilt by poor timekeeping
An amazing insight to the anti-apartheid movement and well worth doing. Extremely educational. However there appears to be no attempt to keep to schedules. They are very strict in their information about the time you must be there but they are much more laid-back about their delivery. We booked the 3pm tour which eventually left at 3.50pm. Instead of returning at about 6.30 it therefore docked at 7.30pm. Some customers did not wait for the tour as they feared they would get back too late to get to the airport for their flight home and several others complained they had missed their dinner reservations. We had to reschedule our 8pm dinner reservation to 8.30. The following day I sat in the harbour and watched the ferry depart about 30 minutes later than scheduled, so clearly not a one-off. It shouldn’t be that difficult to keep to a timetable. It’s a worthwhile experience but spoilt by the casual approach to timing.

    Mandatory visit, although tiring
The visit to "Robben Island" where former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, as well as other prisoners during the terrible period of Apartheid. It is an important historical site and a "must see", although a little more expensive and tiring, lasting 4 hours. You must buy tickets online or directly at the Clock Tower counter, which is located at the Waterfront 4 hours a day. There is a boat that takes 45 minutes to get there and the same time to return from the island, very comfortable and safe, closed and with good seats (I slept this entire period lol). There is a bus and walking tour on site with explanations from tour guides who are former inmates.

    Impressive piece of history
Impressive to see one of the most infamous prisons in the world with your own eyes: Robben Island. We were lucky that the weather conditions were optimal, because if there is a strong wind the boat will not sail and you will be out of luck. After 45 minutes on the boat, we arrived on the authentic island. Here we were shown around by ex-prisoners, who, full of emotion, but also with humor, painted a picture for us of what happened here. First we rode a bus past a number of sights, then we walked around the prison grounds with another guide. He told (personal) stories about everything we saw. Finally, we were shown the cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life. Unbelievable.

    Robben Island Museum
Very interesting experience. 2 part trip, bus tour around the island and then walking the prison. The latter guided by a former prisoner. I enjoyed it and worth it, but I felt we didn´t get to see much of the prison - e.g. where they ate. Also missed more stories from other inmates. However, the guide did share a few fascinating stories from back then.

Good to do, but can be a lot of your time in Cape Town
A really interesting place and so amazing to have the tour led by ex-political prisoners who are so passionate. We felt the tour was a bit long and would be improved if you could choose not to do the bus tour, but just do a quick tour of the prison and then get a more regular ferry back to the mainland. The booking system could be improved as well - we received a cancellation only 25 mins before the tour so we were already there. On the rescheduled day. I received an email in error saying it was cancelled again! It almost led us to turn around the Uber and leave. Definitely room for improvement

    It was OK
The tour was OK. After you get off the Ferry you get on a bus and driven to the entrance of the Prison. It is a guided tour with a lot of people. Unfortunately I couldn’t hear the gentleman when he was talking about the areas we were at. If you were up close to him that was the only way you would be able to hear what he was saying. I would have rather of done the walking tour alone with a detailed map if that was an option. Taking the bus to tour the exterior was a lot better since the gentleman on the bus had a microphone. The only thing I was impressed with is both guides were prisoners with Nelson Mandela and talked about their personal experiences. After the tour you are dropped off by the gift shop which was very well organized. I don’t think I would have done this tour if I knew in advance exactly what it was going to be like. It is a historical site, but again I wish it was more of a walking tour at your own pace.

    Imperishable and pedagogical.
There are people who deserve this tour because they don't have the dimension of the place they are in. A historical milestone that has driven, through the suffering of innocent people, deep changes to the world. Some things could be improved? Of course I do. But thus turning the tour into shit is unacceptable. Come on: the beginning really delays. So it is good to book a 4h to 4h30 of your day. The English of the guides is a little difficult to understand because of the accent. But that's our problem, not theirs. In fact, they were friendly and receptive. I just think there should be more time to walk around. Moreover, for anyone who has the least respect for human suffering and resilience, knowing Robben Island is indispensable and pedagogical.

Amazing insight into political incarceration during Apartheid-era South Africa
I bought the ticket from the museum directly; it included the half-day tour and the return ferry trip. Cost me less than £30 after conversion. The experience was very sobering and made impactful and interesting by the fact that the prison tour is lead by a former prisoner. He was able to tell really personal stories about his experience and incarceration in the island. It also taught me a lot about the history of revolution in Apartheid-era South Africa and there’s many more heroes to be celebrated beyond Nelson Mandela.
