Hotels near Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

    Bonaventure Cemetery
The Bonaventure Cemetery is worth your time while in Savannah. You could just do a drive through and admire the beauty or you could stop along the way and then wander about. There is some signage within the cemetery if you've looking to find the so called highlights. If you're into photography, you'll get some great photos while here.

    Quiet atmospheric burial site
We walked along the quiet paths of the Bonaventure Cemetery for an hour or so… It was so serene, solemn and mysterious… Some of the old statues looked exquisitely delicate and mournfully sad. We had a very nice stroll, but Colonial Park Cemetery, the place where history of Savannah comes alive, was more meaningful for us than beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery, which is a municipal burial site. Colonial Park Cemetery may not to be equally appealing visually, but it is a treasure trove of Savannah’s glorious past.

    A must see
We toured this cemetery when we were leaving town and had a rental car. It was well worth the visit. We were quick, but you could easily spend at least 2 hours here. We saw a few of the more famous graves- Johnny Mercer, Little Gracie. Looking at the other pictures on here I would have liked to have seen some more. My family is from London, so this cemetery reminds me of one from there. Definitely recommend!

    Beautiful--A Must-See
This is a MUST for a visit to Savannah! The beauty of the cemetery is truly unmatched. I would suggest picking up a map at the Bonaventure Historical Society before heading into the cemetery. It has some notable burial sites as well as a detailed map.

If you can only do one tour, do this one.
this was one of the highlights of our trip to savannah. we did not have a rental car for our visit, so we took a tour with gray line tours. (this is not walkable from downtown area). Having a tour guide was a huge advantage as we would not have known so much about this place without one. we enjoyed the look of this place with its moss covered trees and statues . this is well worth the time and money to see and explore.

    Excellent and engaging tour
We recently did a tour of Bonaventure Cemetery with Janine as our guide and would highly recommend it. Janine's knowledge was impressive, and she brought the cemetery's history to life with interesting stories. Over the course of two hours, we learned a lot and really got a feeling about Savannah beyond the walls of the cemetery. Time flew by, a testament to the engaging nature of the tour and Janine's storytelling skills. Overall, our experience at Bonaventure Cemetery was unforgettable, thanks to Janine's expertise and the rich history of the site.

Very eerie even in the day time.
Really beautiful grounds. Spanish moss, it was really great history. The streets could be labeled better. Got to see Corinne. The Spanish American war veterans area was very nice. Would have liked to seen more on the original plantation. The river area was nice and breezy. But when you walk in to the middle of the cemetery it gets a little hotter. I was a little disappointed that more famous people were not there.

    Iconic Savannah
No visit to Savannah would be complete without a stroll through the tranquil grounds of Bonaventure Cemetery. It was on the bench pictured here, in the gravesite of Conrad Aiken, the first Georgia-born author to win a Pulitzer Prize for poetry, that a local woman (Mary Harty) with a deep knowledge of Savannah’s history and legends told author John Berendt the story of the murder of Danny Hansford, the subsequent trials of Jim Williams, and Williams’ sudden death in the same room where Danny Hansford died that became Berendt’s best-selling novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” The iconic “Bird Girl” statue that graced the novel’s cover was originally found here also but now has a new home at the Telfair Academy (see below). There is no charge to visit the cemetery, which is open 8am-5pm daily.

    Peaceful final resting place
Beautiful location, and a very peaceful area. A lot of gorgeous stonework and monuments. Definitely worth a visit. Bathrooms available at the entrance where the historical/visitor center is. Much of the cemetery is drivable, so if it's a very hot day, you can still roll through slowly (just be cognizant of any mourners, as it is working cemetery)! As it has been noted many times, the statue from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has been relocated, so you will not find it here. You can find it at the Telfair Academy Museum.
