Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
We went to and through this plaza many times and always enjoyed the crowds and events. Happened upon a religious celebration one Friday and the place was standing room only. Several restaurants around the sides, one called Eboli, didn't try it just because of the name!
Every time I visit Madrid, I head here for my immersion into whatever temporary art exhibit is being mounted. I’ve seen three exhibitions so far: M. C. Escher, Alphonse Mucha, and Tamara Lempicka. The building is fascinating itself. The exhibitions are always well-paced, with just enough information.
An impressive building in the Plaza Mayor, it stands out for its frescoed facade on the North side of the plaza. Burned down many times and many times rebuilt, it stands out an example of the many lives, many of Madrid’s have had during the 3-4 past centuries.
ALGARABÍA is one of my fixed and unmissable stops in Madrid. This time it was twice in four days, as the first dinner was so delicious that we decided it was worth a second wonderful experience.
Isabel and Pilar pampered us so well that the only thing we could do was to go again.
This tiny cozy place is a...
We went here for dinner due to good reviews on Trip Advisor and since it was close to our apartment. A very cozy place with only about 25 seats - some at a counter. Our waiter, Orlando was from Argentina, spoke wonderful English and couldn't have been more charming. I ordered the house wine and a pizza and my husband...
After trying many hotels in Madrid I discovered Gran Melia Palacio de los Duques In july since then I am always staying at this hotel. It is perfect in Both location and quality of the rooms and service as well as very high quality of food. Only thing missing is a very good restaurant and a real bar.

This is the second time we have visited Madrid and the Hotel Laura, this experience even surpassed the first time.
Our room was on the first floor, 2 levels, one the bedroom and one living area, bathroom and even a kitchen. I was beautiful, comfortable, clean.
The staff were commendable! Marta and Sergio took care of everything we needed, gave...
I spend four nights at VP Plaza Espana Design during a business trip and I was pleasantly surprised. As a person travelling on a weekly base, I am pretty demanding when it comes to my stays during a business trip. But this time it was flawless.
Located at Plaza Espana, basically you are in the heart of Madrid. The hotel...
We stayed here two nights for a sightseeing vacation. The property and people exceeded our expectations. The common areas and rooms have been updated and are fresh and modern (see photos). Our room was larger than typical with a pleasant view of the neighborhood. Some of our sights and restaurants were within a 10-13 minute walk. The Prado is a...
This hotel was an absolute surprise. Perfect location, impeccable hotel condition, staff were excellent and efficient, check in in service was rapid. The restaurant food and cocktails were exceptional.
