Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighbourhood.

"Tall monument in Plaza de Espana"
reviewed August 2, 2018 by LG_Kay
This tall and beautiful monument is located in the centre of Plaza de Espana. Many tourists came here just to take a photo/selfie with this monument and the statues of Don Quixote & Sancho Panza. Enjoy the surrounding fountain & pond in this open space plaza.
Really nice artworks and graffitis in an old tobacco factory. Place is open for public but far from being a tourist attraction. There was local people hanging around and spending their evening surrounded by exceptionally inspirational atmosphere.
Lavapíes, ironically, used to be one of the most "castizo" neighbourhoods where born-and-bred Madrileños were found. But, what happened was generation after generation disappeared and the properties fell into disuse, and prices plummet. So, when immigrants started flowing into Madrid, they started to flock to Lavapíes because property prices were more affordable than the other areas and, besides, it was...
My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to the great craft beer bar called Craft Against The Machine and passed this beautiful church.
The Church Of Saint Cajetan ( Church Of St Millán Y San Cayetano ) was founded in 1612 with the present church construction taking place between 1669 and eventually completed in 1761 but through the years...

It’s a small place but packs a punch. The food quality is amazing. The owner is so nice. Best chorizo in Madrid. Food is homemade and one can tell the difference on every dish. Make sure to come when kitchen is open as they close the kitchen for a couple of hours between 4pm and 6m.
We went based on the TA reviews. Loved it! The staff were very friendly, helping us with our food and drink selections. It’s tucked away from all the touristy restaurants and has a chilled atmosphere with music and soccer on the TV if you want it. If we weren’t going home we would have gone back again!
Extremely efficient when booking online. Perfect ambiance coupled with exquisite dishes. Great team of staff too - ready to serve customers with a smile and in the best possible manner. Highly recommended.
We wanted a hotel close to train station and this hotel was perfect. Staff are very, very helpful. The first night we stayed in a room overlooking the street. Whilst the shutters and windows do block out a lot of noise we struggled to sleep overlooking this busy road. The next morning the staff were able to move us to...
The hostal is clean, quiet and perfectly located near the train station and walking distance to major attractions . The staff is super friendly. They happily kept my luggage after check-out and allowed me to use the restroom when I came back to pick my stuff. They conveniently have a minibar with reasonable prices. I stayed there for 2 nights....
This hostal is very well placed. And the price is really very good . The room are basic but well attended, not high expectations but they are clean and the air conditioning/ heating work well . I spend there a couple of nights but for a short visit I will certainly comeback. Like the breakfast very much and to eat...
