This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
This place is not the easiest to find but it is worth it. A great reminder of the strong Greek influence and Greek population of Istanbul in times gone by (up until about the 1950's I think).

If you knew this love story before you visited the mosque, you would come to appreciate this place of worship even more. Inside it feels as feminine and beautiful as the daughter of Suleyman the Magnificent who took her along to his campaigns

"Intriguing survival of Byzantine church architecture and mosaicwork"
reviewed 17 May 2017 by Rod F
This site is a bit tucked away, but worth the effort of seeking it out. What actually survives is the chapel of the former church, the rest of the church site now being a mosque. The mosaic date from about 1310, and some look as if they were created yesterday. The quality of the Dome's mosaic is especially high quality
There is much sophistication in the taste of food, decor and quality service of the waiter. And the price is very reasonable for this standard of fine dining.
You do not need booking if you are going for lunch.
Do not miss the walnut soup. As well the meat cooked in melon is a must.
The dips, salad, and dessert...
Highly recommend the book "Istanbul Eats". All of our favourite restaurants from the trip were recommended by the book. Frankly I'm starting to question if a high rating on TripAdvisor really means the food is good, or just that its a relatively easy place to eat some decent, cheap food without traveling too far. Speaking of distance, it took about...

“Great hospitality, nice breakfast (eggs, potatoes, sometimes sausage) - very near the Phanar (the Greek Orthodox Patriarch’s seat) and other points of interest. 10-15 minutes and 10-15 lira taxi fare from both Sultan Ahmet/Aya Sofia and Taksim Square.”
