Formerly useful scientist and generally useless manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory, now retired, to my great relief. I have a split personality as regards travel (and maybe other things...): when traveling professionally, I preferred chain hotels, mildly upscale restaurants, etc., on the grounds that the last thing you want under professional conditions is to be laid low by an unexpected gastrointestinal "adventure" or an uninhabitable hotel room, while on vacation, anything goes, and the farther off the beaten path, the better. Generally prefer outdoorsy destinations (excluding beaches) to urban ones, restrained classical-music concerts to noisy rock bands, local-color restaurants to national chains and "fine dining," and do-it-yourself travel to packaged tours, although tour operators who cater to weirdos like us have given us some memorable experiences. Do NOT expect me to wear a tie when traveling if there's any way I can avoid it!
