I loved the restaurant. There are only tables for 4-6 so if you are solo or couple you will share a table if the restaurant is full, which is fun. The soba is good and very fresh. The prices are good. I had the cold soba with sesame sauce which was good and the soba dumpling which I less liked.... More

This place is incredible. The soba noodle was fantastic, along with their side dishes! A must to visit when in Tokyo!

We found this place by accident when the one we were heading for was closed. It is extremely friendly, and one of the waitresses went out of her way to bring us an English menu and explain it to us. We had buckwheat soba (hand cut Te-uchi style on the premises) served by obaasan waitresses. We also had prawn tempura... More

I've heard legends about this place. They say it was set on fire, and it basically came back from the ashes. It's a zombie restaurant. You can burn this restaurant all you want, but you can't burn that soba-loving spirit and determination. First of all, there is a theme to this restaurant. The lovely waitresses like to end their sentences... More

Pretty popular spot, so we had to wait on line, however it moved quickly and well worth the wait. The staff (especially the host) were absolutely superb. They provided an English menu, and explained the different types of soba they offer. The place is always full so be prepared to share a table. Which is quite fun, because hopefully locals... More

The waitress was really nice. She spoke English, gave us English menus and explained everything to us. She quickly brought food and a photograph of Tom Hanks with the locals in the restaurant. Apparently he visited two weeks ago because he had also found the restaurant's good reviews on the internet:))

We visited based on trip advisor ratings. It was a very cozy spot with fantastic udon. The servers were very patient and made great recommendations given our limited Japanese. Food was great and I would highly recommend.

When I was 8 years-old, my parents took me to Kanda Matsuya for soba. It was one of my fondest memories of that trip. Yesterday, nearly fifty years later, we took our daughter to Matsuya. It was every bit as good as I remember it. The depth of flavor of the soba is exceptional. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere... More

The appearances of this restaurant already demonstrates something different from ubiquitous competitors in Tokyo, it's very old and supposed to be one of the best. We ordered kamaboko (cold fishcake) and yakitori(grilled pieces of chicken) for starter to go along with beer and had a large zaru soba(cold soba on a bamboo mat - beware that "large" is not large... This was our first experience with soba, and we were quite surprised it was served cold (this is of course a matter of preference but it was not to our liking). The portions were rather small compared to the price (2000 yen for a smallish dish with noodles and 2 small pieces of shrimp), and there was definitely very little... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.
