We shared a plate of Dojo (Loach fish) simmered in sauces with leeks on top. Cooked at table. This place is the real thing- authentic, pre-Edo cuisine, great ambience, lovely people working and eating there. A total treat, and something one comes across serendipitously.

If you like unagi (fresh water eel) you have to try this place out! Besides the traditional grilled unagi, they serve a style of unagi similar to Sukiyaki. Raw unagi is placed in a shallow skillet then cooked over a open flame. Once cooked add...More

I have not seen Dojou (Loach) restaurants in foreign countries. As Dojou are in river, I thought it should have smells like the ones we experiences for the fishes in Bangkok. Dojou, however, is not like that when properly cooked by good chefs like Iida-ya's....More

My partner and I visited Dozeu Iidaya on a rainy night in July. We were drawn in by the smell on the street, and poked our heads in to see what they served. The dishes were limited to a river fish served several ways; in...More

This restaurant was not far from the Akusasa View hotel where we were staying. Fortunately, one of the young staff spoke some English and was very helpful, as were others who did not speak English but were very kind and welcoming. Dinner was cooked in...More

Totally off the radar and a hidden gem. The traditional foods that are served are unique to Tokyo and date back to pre-Edo times. Very kind staff but you should go with someone who can speak Japanese.

Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old
Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa.
Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit
a variety of different museums and galleries. At
Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the
grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed
alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at
the end of the year, when many people go on shopping
