You cannot go wrong with a soba place where they make the noodles right in front of you. I had to wait 10 min outside and boy I would wait longer if I had too. I decided to deviate from the English menu an order the special of the day. Hot soba with oysters. The consistency of the soba was... More

Usual victim of Lonely Planet attention - Pretty average and over priced food! The English language menu is limited and the prices are quite a lot higher than most soba places. It was also quite cold in the restaurant. Good to see the chef making noodles by hand through the big kitchen window though.

Like many people I spotted this in the Lonely Planet book and I was not disappointed. It's quite small and there was a queue but the noodles are very fresh and tasty. Price a bit on the high side for what you get but I guess they can charge more due to the reputation. Stopped off here on way to... More

We stopped at Yabu Soba for lunch on the advice of Lonely Planet when in busy Ameyoko market. It took some effort to find it - LP says to look for the black granite sign saying "Since 1892." We were certainly glad to find it and get a table upstairs as it was very busy. There was an English menu,... More

This place is in lonely planet and by a miracle I found it. Great selection. Soba made on premises and been there since 1892. I went for the basic simple dish and it was fantastic.

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
