The food was outstanding. My son is coeliac, so we needed to order GF meals, which was very easy at this wonderful little restaurant. The soft shell crab was excellent (wished we'd ordered more), and the terriyaki beef and chicken was also fantastic. Its not 'fancy', there are no table clothes and you help yourself to cutlery from the table,... More

Friendly and discreet service, very helpful and ready to offer advice on choice. Good sweet potato gyoza, excellent seared beef, lovely tofu. Very good lunch specials, too.

The food here is served in large portions without the usual Japanese finesse. Cutlery on the table, food in utility bowls, no cloths. Agadashi tofu tasty but not outstanding, soft shell crab good, gyoshi pretty standard, eggplant dengaku in rough chunks with too much sauce. A good place to introduce the cuisine to big eaters. Food hall quality.

I'm lucky to live in very close proximity to this inviting Japanese/Taiwanese restaurant! We booked a table for four of us to try this local restaurant on a Saturday night. When we got there at 7pm it already looked quite busy so I would recommend making a booking as there's not a huge amount of seating. The cosy dining area... More

Australia is near ish to Asian countries. Consequently the sushi is like nothing you get in Europe. The soft shell crab was fabulous as was all of the sushi we ordered. Nice to get juicy, thick raw fish untarnished by wads of uninteresting rice. Relaxed and family friendly - one of our party was a breast feeding mum. I would... More

We stumbled upon this restaurant at lunchtime. It looked inviting, so in we went. It is authentically Japanese with a pleasant ambience. Our waitress was efficient and friendly and the three dishes we had ranged from very good to excellent. We shall certainly return.

Cute little place on Smith St. Peko Peko's menu doesn't change which is fantastic! Favourites like sweet potato gyoza are freshly cooked to order.

The pleasure of the delicate flavours and simple attractive presentation of food at Peko Peko is something I take delight in. A friend rang me because it was February 8 and wanted to dine where there was some buzz about, and though I had lunched well on my day off at Endis in the backstreets of Fitzroy on a huge... More

Staying in Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Profile
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
