So glad that we eventually managed to eat at Checkmate. The location is not scenic, but inside the restaurant is attractive and welcoming. Eat little during the day as the portions are large. We shared an antipasto platter between 4 and couldn't manage a mains...course. The cold meats, cheeses and hot starters were varied and plentiful. The presentation was attractive. The wine selection was good and provided suitable wines to accompany the meal. Without doubt a place to return to.More

Checkmate was a really big treat for the palate. Abruzzeze sourced food, delightfully presented by a charming host who gave us all the time in the world. Even the tables were made out of local olive wood. Wine was more average. Excellent value at €28per...head. Restaurant quite difficult to find-tucked into an easily missable turning. Worth persevering. Book in advance.More

A few weeks ago we were searching for a place to eat dinner. Having read the rave reviews and living 5 minutes from the restaurant, we went to CheckMate around 7 pm. It appeared that it did not open until 7:30 (a common situation in...Italy--restaurants open late for dinner). We went down the road and decided that we would go back and wait until it opened. When we got back, there were about half a dozen people from 2 cars waiting outside the restaurant. At 7:30, they opened the doors. When we tried to go in, we were told that the restaurant was "full." This was of course, ludicrous, because we could see the large restaurant and it was empty. We have frequently been able to get into a restaurant because we simply want a meal and not a four hour experience, so when we get there early, we are able to eat at a reserved table and leave before the actual reservation time.. They simply turned us away. There was a "Buon Compeanno" (Happy Birthday) banner up, so we guessed that perhaps the entire restaurant was booked for a party, but that is not what we were told. We are guessing that perhaps the restaurant is only open for prebooked parties. However, there is nothing to indicate this either at the restaurant nor on line, and there was no attempt to explain turning us away when obviously any real restaurant could have accommodated us.More

Went to Checkmate after recommendation by friends. Sergio was an excellent host, very welcoming. The inside of the restaurant is very nicely furnished. Because we arrived quite early there was a wait but Sergio filled this time by providing a free glass of Prosecco and...a plate of snacks. The Anti-pasti was splendid with a large selection of meat and cheese. We chose the black Angus steak with mushrooms and truffles (Sergio picks those himself). This was some of the best beef I've ever tasted! Desert was cheese cake which was lovely. All for a total of €52, amazing value. We had a wonderful meal and will definitely be going back. Would truly recommend others to give this place a try.More

A really lovely evening. Good food and wine, great value, excellent attention to detail in all areas, but the best thing was the attentive host. Thank you!

Ignore the approach to this restaurant and you'll be in for a real treat. We were greeted by the host at the restaurant as if we were long lost friends. The service was excellent and well-paced. The antipasti was probably one of the finest we've...eaten and there was lots (possibly too much) of it. Our secondi dishes were excellent. One of the best meals we've had. Highly recommended.More

If you like char-grilled steaks, you'll love it here as they're the house speciality. Massive (actually, *too* massive) antipasti selection. Good house wine. Friendly welcome. Exceptionally nice indoor surroundings. Comfortable. Tables not too close together. Massive carpark. But service can creak a bit when it's...busy.More

As someone else has said don't be put off by the look of the outside and the dogs!! The inside is a pleasant well furnished restaurant and the owner Segio is very helpful and eager to please. The antipasti plate is huge, a meal on...its own, and the steaks are excellent.More

It's shameful to say that in the many years of visiting and finally living in this area last night was our first visit to CheckMate. The restaurant was well laid out and the ambience welcoming, Sergio was a great host from start to finish and...although we were the first guests it didn't take long for the other tables to fill with happy diners. We were welcomed with a glass of Prosseco and relaxed into our seats before being served our excellent antipasti of grilled cheese and vegetables that were served with a delicious lemon flavoured oil. Our main course of steak was prepared exactly how we'd requested and was so large I was unable to finish it, which was a great shame. The exterior of the restaurant is deceiving as inside it's a beautiful place with great attention to detail. It's not the least expensive local restaurant being mid to top end but I'd recommend CheckMate to anyone looking for a good quality dining experience.More

During a short holiday in Abruzzo and after consulting TripAdvisor we decided to try Checkmate. From the outside it looks like a meat packing factory in a lorry park. Don't let that put you off. Inside is like an oasis and Sergio runs the place...with an energy that makes you tired. The menu is not long and don't bother going if you've not got a big appetite or you're a vegetarian. We're in meat country here! It's basically big platters of meat and cheese to start and big plates of super grilled meat to finish with pasta in between. Phew! Sergio spoke a little English and we spoke less Italian, but we got on fine. When he'd run out of the pasta dish I ordered he offered to make another one from scratch and even brought the ingredients to the table for my approval. The main course steaks were sublime. So good we went again a few evenings later, this time well prepared for what was to come! It's only open Thursday to Sunday. I guess Sergio has to lay down in a darkened room for the rest of the week. It's also great value, so if you're in the area, give it a try.More

After reading all the wonderful things about CheckMate here on Tripadvisor, we were looking very much forward to visiting. We were greeted by a super nice guy and shown our table in a not-very cozy room, 80'ies classics blazing from the sound system. We were...served (not very memorable) entrées and a rich and flavored accompanying beer and then our two courses with wine. While the latter was really nice (and local), the food was mediocre. There was plenty of it (almost too much), the meat was good, the mushrooms fantastic (various kinds) but the bread wasn't fresh, the pasta not home made and all courses it lacked personality and care for detail. Overall I would recommend this place, but don't expect too much - there are plenty of other restaurants - truer to the local cuisine and with better food - in the area as well.More

We've been patronising the Checkmate for several years and through several incarnations. When we first visited the area, the Checkmate was a ruin; lovingly and arduously restored by Sergio - with stunning vision and energy - and transformed to a friendly, relaxed, very high-quality establishment....We've had a number of memorable and drunken nights at DJ and live music sessions (the Queen tribute group were brilliant); we've had marvellous pizzas and recently, the best antipasti we have ever eaten, followed by steak, served unembellished but for salad and chips - melt-in-the-mouth and wonderfully flavoursome meat. Sergio - always - is a wonderful, warm and welcoming host and the place runs like clockwork (much credit to the lovely Monia for this, too!). A stay in Abruzzo just would not be the same without at least one visit to the Checkmate: and we simply cannot recommend it highly enough. On a more personal note, we are also both very happy to count Sergio and Monia as two of our very good friends in Abruzzo. Long may they prosper! We'll be back at the Checkmate in September - can't wait!More
