I always take a moment to read the worst reviews of a place I have never been before with the knowledge of foresight that most of these will be written by people who are unnecessarily picky, pernickety or petty. I look for those that ring true.
We were at Hook, Line and sinker for an almost annual visit spanning more than a decade and three owner/ chefs. It was not unexpected therefore when I looked at the one and two star ratings whilst lying in bed for a postprandial somnolence were from the generation when the standard was set, and the food was ridiculously good while the chef/ owner was minimally abusive.
In my estimation and that of our large extended family and the many who have written on the walls over the years, this remains the ridiculously, most delicious, lip-smacking seafood we have ever eaten in SA or anywhere else we have travelled. And the value for money is equally outrageously good for a South African. But for our daughter and her husband, out from England, the price for a huge portion of sea food, starters and puddings, was jaw-droppingly cheap. The rules are the same - this is a tiny restaurant which runs on tight margins and so you must confirm the day before or they will give your table away so if you get this and do it right, all will be right in the world.
The menu, quality and ambiance has remained consistent over the years (including the Crème brûlée made before your eyes) the only thing that has changed since the beginning is the fact that the latest chef/ owner is a gem of a person and it feels like we have got over an abusive love/ hate relationship at last.

We stayed 7 days in Pringle Beach and would have visited Hook Line & Sinker every day if a table would have been available. So we had the great honour to enjoy the wonderful food and atmosphere twice.
As always written in the many other comments we can only repeat all the good remarks. Small, private atmosphere, nice people, good and friendly service. Heavy pieces of nice local and fresh fish of the day. Perfectly prepared on open fire.
A bottle of wine, a tasty fish soup as a starter and Creme Brulee as desert and candle light - we felt in 7th heaven. Finding such restaurants nowadays is a great gift.
Definetely a strong recommendation.

My husband booked for this a few weeks in advance for my birthday dinner. We arrived tonight to find the restaurant closed. How shocking that you could not be bothered to let us know in advance when you had our details There are a number of new restaurants in the village. You may have been an institution in the past but with this attitude to your customers…….

In all my years of visiting restaurants, this is probably the most ridiculous and pathetic place you'll ever get, the food is totally overrated and oily. And the owner Jacqui and staff were extremely rude and told my wife and I we were full of kak when we asked if we can get a knife to cut our fish with because the only thing we got was a fork and a piece of paper to put our food on and not even a plate. My wife's been here at Hook Line and Sinker before and the staff were as rude as they were when we went this time and the owner told my son to fck off when he was looking for the restrooms. The owner thinks she can cook but can only cook dog food out of a can and is definitely not a chef. If you want to waste your money then go to Hook line and sinker and you'll waste absolutely every cent. This place is totally overrated and very kak and not worth a visit!

Went based on a recommendation from some friends that had been a couple of weeks after a revamp and a tv show and said it was good. Well I guess things have changed.
The fish was fresh and once you got through the batter was ok, the chips were “ slap” soggy and quite oily.
A salad was served, if you can call it a salad it consisted of sliced cabbage, peanuts and mayonnaise, but then again the place is not renowned for its salad!!!
The chef ( well rather let me say cook) was very different and luckily we had been warned about her rudeness, but still surprised at it!!
It was an experience not to be repeated.
The best part of the entire experience was the creme brûlée, getting the bill and departing.
Missing a trick as this could be an amazing place and huge potential.

Hook, Line and Sinker is an unassuming little local gem, with a weighty reputation for excellent service and absolutely delicious food! Their setup is simple - whatever seafood is in fresh, grilled over an open fire. We’ve been incredibly blessed to have traveled the world over and this was easily one of the best meals either of us has ever had. Can highly recommend the fish soup (out of this world!) and the Patagonian calamari with chorizo. Not to be missed, when passing through town. Maybe, even worthy of being the reason you come to Pringle Bay in the first place... 😁😋

!We were there for lunch. No menu on the day. Fish & chips with salad and a side of calamari only. Tasty & crispy! Hidden gem. Loads of atmosphere.. small & intimate. Rustic with a charm of its own. Make sure you book beforehand, otherwise no table for you. Definitely going back again!

If you can secure a booking at this hidden gem you will have a wonderful and memorable evening. Delicious food cooked with care. Such a fantastic atmosphere. Helena (I hope I have spelled that right!) was an excellent hostess. Overall: would highly recommend!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Hook, Line and Sinker. The food was superb, fresh and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was cozy and the owner very welcoming. This place is real find. We could taste love and care Jacqui put into the food. We highly recommend this restaurant and will certainly be back.
