I had been curious about this Café ever since I walked past it on route to the Post Office one day as it is one of those places where you can smell the coffee emanating from inside as you walk past it, even though the...door is shut. A sign of the times perhaps as at least it wasn’t cigarette smoke. The day I walked up the steps and pushed through the door the coffee smell wasn’t as strong as I had previously experienced. Nevertheless, inside the Cafe had a relatively low ceiling and so appeared long and rather narrow and I was surprised to see such a lot of customers there so early in the morning. There were a few workmen in evidence but not all of them were. Immediately on the left hand side as you walk in, almost in the doorway in fact, is a Paris Mutual Betting terminal on a small counter which probably explains the place’s popularity as I had to wait until the server finished a punter’s rather complicated business before I got served. The wait gave me a chance to look round and there are wooden tables and chairs up against the wall opposite the counter, at the back the cafe opens out into a wider area with soft seating and here a group of some 5 people were putting the world to rights. There is some raised outside seating under a roller cover for the nicer weather but it is centimeters from the road down which juggernauts pass on their way to the autoroute so it doesn’t have a great outlook and at times one might fear for one’s safety if one was sitting there. My coffee when it arrived didn’t taste particularly strong and I didn’t think the aroma from that expresso would make it past the door so wondered what was being brewed on the day my curiosity was sparked? Consequently I left as intrigued as I had been before I had arrived.More
