I dined with 2 friends and my wife following a cycle down from London following lockdown. We were warmly greeted and taken to our table outside. The space is huge and great for families, people with dogs or just a good group of friends.
The kitchen has recently been taken over by Brambles, apparently made up of Sussex chefs, we had the sharing starters £4 per person (great value) copious amounts of beer (we got the train home) and a bottle NV Wiston Bruit with 4 roasts 4 puds for just £65 a head (we added service). A great pub with proper landlords and a great kitchen just north of Brighton!
Can't wait to go back.

This was our first experience of venturing out for supper and it was exceptionally good. The large garden made social distancing easy and there were plenty of staff who were very helpful. Food exceeded expectations, Hake cerviche was delicious , as was cheesecake with sour apple sorbet. We will be back!

Thank you so much for such a positive review following your recent visit.
We follow the guidelines as much as we can and worry sometimes if that is putting customers off.
Your comments really help and we look forward to seeing you again soon

Really great pub - nice beer garden with plenty of seats and space.
The menu is unusual and has plenty of small plates and mains.
Our food and service was really good. My husband is on a new restricted diet because of a medical condition and the waitress and chef were so helpful and made him up something that would suit.
Thank you!

Having always relied on the New Inn for a traditional Sunday Roast I was disappointed with the offerings. Having arrived at 1pm we were told the beef had already sold out. As one of the party is vegetarian the marrow didn’t sound appetizing and the fish was unable to be filleted so did not fancy having to deal with a fish head and tail on the plate! The rest of the party had the chicken roast but there was a distinct lack of vegetables for a roast dinner and the roast potatoes were very small. Although I can see that the pub is trying to do a ‘posh roast’ this really didn’t work in this case. The new menu does look nice but there is barely any healthy vegetarian or fish options so one member of our party was left with a bowl of cauliflower cheese as a meal which when you’re paying a lot of money to eat out with your family isn’t really what you want. I can see where the pub menu is going with the use of the garden etc but in the future you might consider opening up the pizza oven - which was a big hit last summer - and offering some salads and sandwiches again.

I am so sorry that you were disappointed with your Sunday meal but I would like to address some of the points you raise.
As our beef is a prime cut we cook joints on a staggered basis to avoid any of the meat having to be reheated. Our 1st joint had sold out by 1pm but the next one was ready by 1.20.
The 2 vegetarian dishes of roast marrow with curd cheese and wheat berry risotto with mild nettles were tasty and popular and healthy alternatives to the roast.
We had lemon sole, skate and hake on our menu that day which we consider to be a good fish offering. Whilst we serve the whole fish the heads are always removed.
We have never offered pizzas or sandwiches on a Sunday as like you say, people come to rely on a good, traditional Sunday roast which we concentrate on.
Next time you visit please just ask for more vegetables and we will be happy to bring extra.
We do hope to see you again

Well, what can we say, from start to end and everything inbetween this pub is exceptional. As a Travel Agent, I have had the wonderful opportunity of eating around the World and can honestly say every bit of our meal was faultless and superb. Between the 4 of us, we had a wide variety of dishes, squid, pate, the local steak cooked on the Josper grill with garlic roasted carrots, guinea fowl, battered hake, the hazlenut mousse, sticky toffee pudding just incredible taste with everything. All washed down with local ale and recommended wine in a beautiful setting next to the lit fire in the inglenook fireplace. Service was very professional and lovely and friendly, this had been highly recommended to us by very good friends of mine. Really cannot recommend enough and really look forward to our second visit after lockdown. Thank you to you all for making our day so very very special, Vanessa & Richard x

Here with a group of eight friends for Sunday lunch yesterday in perfect weather and sat outside. The garden at the New Inn is large and tables spaced sensibly. There is shade if you want it in covered areas or under parasols. The menu on a Sunday is heavily biased towards roasts. Generous portions of venison, pork, beef, lamb and vegetarian options are accompanied with roast potatoes, a mixed vegetable boulangère, parsnips, carrots, yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese. I opted for Pork which was cooked just right with decent crackling and medallion of stuffing within it. The chef, Peter Hampson, has worked at several premium pub restaurants in the area and has a long association with the New Inn. The kitchen is immaculately clean, you can see it on your way from the bar to the garden such is Peter's pride in his work. Waitresses are polite, as are bar staff. They, along with Peter checked diners in the garden were happy from time to time throughout our meal. Prices are very reasonable given the quality of the food, service and experience here and I would recommend sitting outside if you can. On a good day there is nowhere locally that beats the garden at the New Inn.

We decided to visit the New Inn after visiting Hurst festival on ‘super Sunday’ where we enjoyed a burger from outside pub itself. Whilst waiting for the burger we had a little look inside the pub. A lovely setting, it felt cosy and had a nice garden. Dogs were welcome also.
Fast forward to our first visit, WOW what lovely food we had! We each had a roast dinner plus a side of cauliflower cheese. The food was simply stunning!
Yes it was more expensive than your average Sunday pub roast, but it was worth every penny and for anyone who loves a roast, you should pay here a visit! The food is far from average. It’s definitely somewhere we will visit again.
The staff were friendly and attentive, the service was of good pace and we rounded our meal off with a dessert which was also lovely. We will be back :-)

I took my cousins here for Sunday lunch, being new to the area and rather nervous as to what it would be like. I needn't have worried. The food was really outstanding, delicious and plenty of it. And the atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed.
The dining room is not crowded, with space between tables, so we felt relaxed re Covid. And small enough with very quiet background music so that we could converse for all we were worth throughout the meal with no difficulty.
And to top it all, the staff could not have been more welcoming or charming. All in all a delightful visit and i would heartily recommend it.

First time going there was lunchtime today on an unplanned visit.
From The High Street the outside is uninspiring. Once you step inside, everything from the staff, to the food, the location, the decor, the beer garden.... it's all fantastic. We loved it & will most definitely come back to sample this hidden gem again. Special thank you to the helpful & welcoming staff at today's lunchtime for making us feel welcome, even with kids & bikes!!

I/we were left very disappointed with the food we ordered. When ordering I specifically told the waitress how I wanted my food cooked. As we were both having the same thing and when it arrived we could not tell which one was which, the waitress delivering the food did not know either! I asked to speak to the waitress that had taken my order and asked which was which. She said they were both the same as she had not put my request in with the order!!! I was gobsmacked. As I was there with my friend and we have not seen each other in ages I did not want to tarnish the evening by complaining so ate what I deemed was a horrible and expensive meal as it was not how I wanted it at all. It was dry and tasteless for me!!! Service left a lot to be desired as all of a sudden our table was emptied of everything and it was our cue to leave. All very blunt and abrupt. We will not be going back to this establishment again. This was the second time I have eaten there, the first was just as bad as we were sat in a room with people who swore all night long, so based on these two experiences I would much prefer to spend my hard earned money elsewhere.

I've been to The New Inn a few times but was disappointed with the new Brambles menu with the only cooked item on the plate being the BBQ part - fish/meat/veggie. It wasn't expensive but if you want a traditional pub menu this is not the place. Lovely setting and staff but shame about the change of menu.

Thank you for taking the time to review and for your constructive feedback.
Since lockdown we built our bbq kitchen which is where our inspiration comes from, especially in the beautiful sunshine! Mid week we're offering some nice pub alternatives more "traditional", but I am sure as time goes by, our menu will evolve as we get more used to our new surroundings.
Thank you again and hopefully we will see you, soon!

We have always relied on the New Inn for a great roast but lately the food and menu choice has gone so downhill. The roast potatoes, of which there were hardly any were barely edible, it's safe to say the chef must've been sparse on the vegetables that day too.
On a second visit my mother ordered fish and chips with 'mushy' peas. The batter was a pale colour we've never seen and the peas were simply just peas on thier own that had been crushed. Bemused i pointed out both errors to the staff but they didn't care.
I hope management shake up the kitchen staff and restore the quality their loyal locals once enjoyed.

When you read this in the context of other reviews it is difficult to imagine that you actually came here.
As always most of these things could have been sorted whilst you were here and I simply do not believe that if you did speak to one of our members off staff you were ignored - it is not the way we do things!
BTW the batter is light because we use gluten free flour and more importantly, we change our oil on a daily basis.
Suggest you ask to speak to one of the 3 chefs if and when you visit again.

We went on a Sunday and had an enjoyable time.
Children had the Sunday roast, my wife and I decided to have a range of starters rather than take the Sunday Roasts.
The monkfish cakes were wonderful, well worth ordering.
We will return.

Second visit to sample new chef’s menu.
Served Cajan Chicken on top of Pitta bread(?) with chips. Crab and Asparagus salad- soggy white meat crab was plentiful but bland.
Service was good.

We all had the assorted bread, pickles, hummus and mackerel pate as a starter and it was faultless. The bread fabulous, the butter luscious and the pate superb. The hummus was beautiful and the assortment of pickles worked incredibly well. Yes it was amazing.
The burger was equally tasty with ubiquitous brioche bun, homemade beef Patty, cheese and bacon too. Chips good and dressings nice. I had ice cream for pudding and it was proper dairy ice cream.
Staff all polite, service efficient and not overly pricey considering how expensive things have become.
My only other observation was that there are plenty of lovely looking things on the menu. I will absolutely be back and I’ll recommend it to everyone.
Great night out.
