American owned and operated smoked barbecue restaurant and pub, now combined with Chicago pizza and craft beer on tap. Our three specialty dishes are Carolina pulled pork, Kansas City baby back ribs and Texas beef brisket. All of our sauces and sides are made in-house. Indoor and outdoor seating available. This place has done the impossible: got the dozen high school freshman for whom I’m nominally responsible (what were their parents thinking) to SHUT UP for two hours as they shovel ribs, mac n cheese, burgers and pizza down like I haven’t fed them in days (or like they were hung over all day because some jackass snuck a bottle of gin in his bag). The food is great, the service is friendly, and whoever put the playlist together may be my best friend. We’ll definitely be back, minus a dozen teenagers (take the kids to the beach they said. It’ll be great they said).

Excellent Western Theme Restaurant and BBQ in Hualien

We visited this restaurant during our holidays to Hualien. It was a good thing we made reservations as it was Christmas eve and the place was pretty full. The restaurant has 2 floors with a bar and seating area downstairs. As there were 10 of us we were given a place upstairs. We decided to order a couple of items of the menu for sharing and we sampled the Kansas city baby back ribs, hand-tossed pizza, the windy city wings and onion rings. Overall all the items were good except you can give the onion rings a miss. A bit too thick for our liking. The standout dish was the back ribs, which were so good we had to have a second serving of a full rack. The meat is well marinated, succulent and pretty much falling of the bones. We were so engrossed in the meal that I did not have a chance to take a picture of the dish.😋 It was an excellent restaurant for American BBQ in Taiwan, though a tad bit pricey. But I guess as long as the food is great is well worth the splurge every now and then. The service by the staff was great and in most cases we did not have to wait long for the staff when called to our table though it was a busy night. If and when we ever visit Hualien, we will definitely be back for seconds and perhaps thirds.....

We all had the Mediterranean salad, some with chicken, and really enjoyed it. They were able to accommodate for gluten free (not a lot of options, but they were knowledgeable.). I would recommend Salt Lick if you are looking for a an authentic Anerican style eatery.

The meal was disappointing

The meal was disappointing and slow service, the onion rings had no favor. Small salad with meal had over rip tomatoes. The meal was warm but not really hot, over all disappointed with the meal. Ordered a cup of chili hoping to have as appetizer but did not come until after meal was severed and it was not hot either.

A Top Western Restaurant in All of Asia!

As an American who has traveled the world and lived in Asia for decades, I've never found a better Western/BBQ restaurant. The Salt Lick hidden away on the beautiful East Coast of Taiwan has been a local favorite for years and we were lucky enough to learn about it after we moved here and got the "local intelligence"..Even though Hualien is a 2 hour drive we make the journey once a month because the food, drink and service is exceptional. The founder, owner and manager Jason runs a complex menu, staff and customer demand level with efficiency and quality. He imports many of the ingredients and even the wood he uses to smoke all of the meats. They bake all of their own bread and a majority of the ingredients are all homemade. The steaks are USDA imported, the pizza is wood-oven fired, the greens are local and fresh and the desserts are insanely good - including home baked hot apple pie with vanilla ice cream! Try his chili, it is made to perfection and we always have to order more..The shrimp/chicken gumbo made my Taiwanese wife so happy that she even missed her usual photos before digging in! The Mediterranean salad is super tasty with homemade hummus and dressing. Couple all of this with a fun, full bar, plenty of beers on tap and Western decor that makes you feel right back at home, the Salt Lick is Taiwan's go to restaurant that is fortunately out here on the lovely East Coast where many of Taiwan's foreigners have learned to make home.

Great american style barbecue n pizza place.

Great american style barbecue and pizza restaurant with a great playlist and great beer. Gegging off everyones food as I walked in made a decision hard but went for the pizza: 12 inch meet lover and it didn’t disappoint, saucy, tangy and meaty. My partner went for a pulled pork sandwich which was as big as it was delicious. I recommend the LOCAL Red Point IPA.

Nice place with delicious meal!

My friends and I came here for a dinner, before visiting Night Market down the road. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm and friendly service. The decor is quirky and inviting and we immediately felt comfortable. I love that the menu is quite minimalistic and uncomplicated. We chose several starter dishes and two main dishes: pizza and steak, which was plenty to fill us up. The food was excellent and unusually the menu was concise with enough choice to satisfy most tastes. The dim sum were excellent and the mains faultless. All in all a very pleasant meal.

Much needed BBQ

Visited as a family of 4 in search of our first American BBQ since moving to Taipei a year ago. The food was amazing. We had ribs, cheese pizza (for kids), Mediterranean salad, fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, and Mac & cheese. The food was so great we plan to return tonight. The Mac & Cheese was not to our taste preference so we won’t have that again. Everything else was excellent. The staff was also very kind and helpful.

Average and slow service burnt Pizza

We went on a Friday night so busy. Quick to take our order (2 pizzas) but took 45 minute for first to arrive and second 10 minutes later. Drinks came fast and the beer choice rather good, the house wine was also ok. Staff obviously a bit stressed out during our visit. Has high reviews but pizza just average, second one that came late cold and burnt but we were just anxious to eat something and leave.

WTF is this place doing in Hualien!

The food here is seriously amazing. My family is from Texas and after living in Taiwan for 13 years the food at Salt Lick brought tears to my eyes. BBQ this good is isn't suppose to be in Taiwan, but it is.

Food portion is huge. For 3 persons, we ordered Onion Ring, Kansas City Baby Back Ribs and USDA Black Angus Ribeye and we did not finish them. The baby back ribs was kinda hard and Ribeye in medium is good in garlic butter, will be better if there is option for mushroom or blackpepper sauce. Onion ring tasted plain. The food price is relatively high, we spent NTD 2,888. The staff was nice and helpful that we could take away the unfinished french fries and onion ring.

Enjoyable BBQ

My wife took me here since my non-Taiwanese taste buds missed some food from America. We had an excellent time and the Salt Lick delivers on its expansive menu. I had the Chicago style sausage which was absolutely delicious. I couldn't argue on authenticity but the sausage had an American taste, different than the sweeter Asian sausages you would find in Taiwan. We also had the veggie pizza which is the best we had in Taiwan. Definitely a place to come if you want to change up your food experience in Taiwan.

Wow this place is out of this world. The brisket was so tender and with amazing flavor. Soft bread with outstanding meaty chili. We also got the half ribs with mac and cheese. As a past chef the Mac and cheese was some of the best I've ever had. Exactly the flavors I enjoy. Ribs so sticky and fall off the bone just outstanding. Wings also fall right off juice and full of the right flavor. Craft beers too!!!! Seriously this place you just can't miss. Exactly like America. Highly recommend!!!

The pulled pork sandwich is really good. I will be back for more. Really nice to find a place like this after eating asian food for 2,5 weeks. Usually places like this don't live up to the hype, but I must say this is a 5/5 for me. In the US or europe, possibly 4/5 due to stiff competition with nice burgers and better beer selection.

The Best Beef Brisket!

Excellent American style BBQ restaurant with a menu with something for everyone. Popped by without a booking and managed to get a table but this place is busy so I’d say booking might be recommended during peak times. I had a lovely pizza and my partner had the beef brisket which he’s still speaking about now. Friendly staff and great price point. Wish we’d had time to come back for a second visit!!
