AKA The Flying squirrel restaurant I think this place has a better reputation than it deserves. It wasn't awful but for the money, I expect better. Even on a little, sparsely populated island like Cortes. The beer was cold. I'll give them that. While we...were waiting for too long, (the place had one other table eating before us so, it's not like the kitchen could have been overwhelmed with orders) I started whining to my wife. She said that the wait was probably a good thing because it meant they were taking the time to do everything right. Poutine with cheddar: They're doing all sorts of variations out there on poutine these days. Doesn't necessarily need to be curds. I'm no Quebecer purist. At least the portion was good but yeesh. Very little cheese, and the gravy was clearly of the instant variety. Gelatinous, clear brown, artificially enhanced flavor. Fish tacos: Maybe the worst the wife has ever had. Rubbery shells holding a meager amount of contents. The cod inside was good but the salmon was not. Louisiana chicken and prawns (jambalaya?): This is where I learned why it took so long for our dinner to come. They had to make certain that every possible bit of prawn essence was cooked right the #!@%? out of the three (count 'em) pathetic, undersized, partially peeled, freezer burned..... Ok.... maybe they weren't actually freezer burned. I don't know. It'd be impossible to figure that out once they'd been cooked that much. The chicken was.... present. It existed in the dish. The veggies and rice were the best part of it all but it's the meat that takes the price up to $25 a plate. Please treat the meat with a modicum of respect. Season the chicken before you grille it and put a bit of color on it. Serve fresh prawns (especially if one can actually see prawn traps out in the bay in front of where you're eating) that won't be confused for shrimp, and Google how to cook them. The server was capable. The cook (that day) needed some guidance.More
