First of all, the proprietor, Wannicha by name, is indeed one of the most congenial hosts you'll be likely to meet in Thailand. She's sweet, accommodating, and treats customers as if they were her grandchildren. That is reason enough to go there. The Thai offerings...were authentic and good. Those that our party of 4 tried were all up to usual standard. BUT . . . there were several Western offerings, including pizzas and -- featured on the inside back cover -- a Special Menu, which consisted of a sandwich, French fries, and a small salad. I ordered the Special, and opted for the bacon and cheese sandwich. What a disappointment! I could not find even a hint of bacon or cheese in the sandwich; the filling consisted entirely of mayonnaise and vegetables. And the French fries; they were both cold and limp. Finally the salad consisted of two very small slices of cucumber and 3 even smaller slices of tomato. No other Western food was tried, but based on the one I did try, I'd avoid all the others at all costs. If you want good Western food, make your way to Chiang Rai, where a few places do a masterful job. Finally, the thatched roof of Sunshine Cafe is roosting place for a number of small birds, who -- being birds -- do their "thing" whenever the mood strikes. Diners should pay attention to the ceiling, and to the accumulations on the floor, when choosing where to take a seat. But throughout it all, Khun Wannicha will be ever present to try to attend to your needs and desires. She, all by herself, is worth a star in the ratings.More
