I was staying at the NH Capri Hotel which is just under 1KM away from El Idilio. It was a LONG journey from Vancouver, Canada to Varadero airport and then a 2 hour ride by van to get to Havana at around 5:30AM Cuba time....I am tired and hungry and my Sunwing rep and hotel concierge each had a different recommendation of where to eat, but I stuck with a recommendation found in The Lonely Planet Havana Pocket Book Edition. The of course, did some backup checking for TripAdvisor reviews. This restaurant had very good reviews so I decided to try it out.
Upon arriving at around 3PM, I was greeted by a nice young lady and she pointed me to a small table. The tables are covered in a trendy purple checkered table cloth.
I ordered the skewered lobster with Malanga, a root vegetable that is said to be high-finer and more nutrient dense than potatoes.
The verdict: The overall meal was OK. Some bits were tender, other bits slightly chewy and I found one tiny undercooked segment. There is an odd spice they used which didn’t help with the overall taste. Also, the pineapple chunks included on the skewer were not very ripe. I’d rate the dinner a 3 out of 5. But it is Cuba after all and perhaps expectations should be tempered.
The service is great, I can’t fault the service at all. 5 out of 5. I’d recommend trying it, and be your own judge.
