Here is what you've been looking for. Thus, you needn't run around the city frenetically seeking the finest Oaxacan cuisine. El Escapulario has the best in home-cooked food passed down through generations. The chef-owner is a delight and as unpretentious and authentic as her culinary presentations. My favorites are her tortilla soup with avocado chunks that ooze flavor. There is... More

we went to several of the top rated restaurants for Mexican food in Oaxaca and this one was our favorite. The charming owner and hostess, Esther, will give you recommendations on the food and also information on things to see and do in and around Oaxaca. The food is traditional and made to order, so you may have to wait... More

Two terrible margatitas, probably the worst ever. Questionable if there was any tequilla, cloying sweet, probably the 2nd one i have didn't finish. That was after i questioned the server and she poured in tequilla. The rice papadum-sort of- was enjoyed by two of us. My enchillada verde was radient green, like none like previously visualized. The two pork Negro moles... More

This little family-run business is a winner. The menu has a great range of Oaxacan specialities and is packed with flavour at a reasonable price. It's a small place but the location is good and the staff are really friendly. It definitely feels more down-to-earth than many of the restaurants dotted around this area of Oaxaca so I would definitely... More

This restaurant on the second floor overlooking the beautiful colonial street of Garcia Vigil was a real treat. We had lunch by the window overlooking the street and were the only party seated. Service was good and we definitely got food made to order. Perhaps the most outstanding dish was an appetizer of Chile rellenos con salsa naranja - a... More

We had the good luck to stay close by El Escapulario and ate here three times during our recent Oaxaca visit. Tasty home cooked food, an excellent menu del dia, and great prices. Highly recommended.

Maybe we chose the wrong things off the menu? Maybe the menu should have less dishes with their specialities taking priority? Previous TAdvisor reports praised the helpful explanations. "this is chicken, this is meat or chicken, this is pork" did not help! The tastes are no doubt authentic, but can be found equally good elsewhere, including in the "expensive" Zocalo.... More

Simple restaurant running by simple people Great food. I always rely in Trip advisor, and this time was not exception. Very modest restaurant that I suppose that it was a mistake to dinner there. The food is excellent. The water of zapote very tasty.Real Oaxaqueñan food made. It takes sometime to prepare the food. We enjoyed very much. The owner... More

I found this restaurant by accident and am so happy I did. Prices were great, food was wonderful and the service was exceptional. As a foreigner, I was made to feel so comfortable. I will definitely be back.
