This lovely place is mostly a house patio where you will feel at home. The cooking is real food from Oaxaca, with local and seasonal ingredients. They have their own mezcal too! You can try the fixed menu or going a la carte.

Must stop here if you are after authentic tradition food from the Istmo de Tehuantepec. Try the tamal for a start and then the istemeño platter. They're both outstanding!

La Teca (Violetes 200A, Colonia Reforma, Oaxaca, Mexico, tel. 951-515-0563) There was a review in Arrecife Magazine and many people recommended it. The owner and cook is de Deianira Aquino. We had a very good meal with the best “mole negro” we have eaten in Oaxaca. We sat in the garden and we were the only customers. It was not... More

The restaurant is very inconspicuous and easy to miss from the outside. The food is fantastic and very different from everything else we tried in Oaxaca. They specialize in isthmus cuisine (referring to the isthmus of Tehuantepec) from the eastern part of the state.

I was a little bit dissapointed, after reading the comments, i thought that the food had to be very good but it was okay, nothing more ...

We visited here on a quiet evening, sat in the beautiful backyard, and had a good meal. I wouldn't rate it as one of the best I've had in Oaxaca City or even in the Colonial Reforma neighborhood, but it was well-prepared and the atmosphere in the garden was very pleasant.

La Teca is a little removed from the restaurant precint surrounding the Zocalo but is worth the walk for great tasting tamales and crunchy garnachas. We found the serving sizes to be a little small, which could be perfect if you don't like stuffing yourself, but if you're really hungry I'd recommend getting one of the larger mains or at... More

The restaurant is truly a hidden jewel. Away from the city center in a quiet neighborhood. We sat in the lovely garden. Only about four tables. The food was truly authentic and every dish, especially the tamales, were prepared and seasoned beautifully. Homemade and delicious. The server was very warm and attentive.

We took our friends, one of whom IS Mexican. We had our doubts as we arrived - out of the centre, little shopfront on busy street, but WOW! when we got in there was a sweet garden, enormous tasting menu of delicious food based on grandmother's recipes, and excellent Mescal, with lovely, knowledgeable service. An absolute MUST if visiting Oaxaca... More

My wife and I spent a week in a gastronomic tour of Oaxaca city, eating in a different restaurant every day, which had been recommended by our friends who either live in Oaxaca or go there often. IMHO: this was the best, as well as being far and away the least expensive or pretentious. The garnachas are exquisite, so crisp... More

Traditional food from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, all made when you order, all delicious. A garden area available when it's not too chilly or rainy. Wonderful art, and great service.
