Hubby was a bit apprehensive when we approached the restaurant… it didn’t look like it was an appropriate location for a restaurant on that dirt road, but you forget all about it as soon as you go through the entrance.
I loved everything we had starting with the octopus tacos (I personally am not an octopus fan but enjoyed it), the bone marrow appetizer (can’t remember what is called), and the obligatory salsa, guacamole and chips. Hubby got the Michoacano el Muchacho. There was a LOT of meat on that bone. I got the beef rib. They served freshly handmade tortillas (yellow and blue corn) with our entrées. For dessert we shared a paricutin cake with ice cream (made with blue corn). The whole meal was very flavorful, although we wasted a lot of it because we ordered so much. The dog was cute and was happy to take care of our leftovers. Marcos, our server, was very attentive and helpful. Nice ambiance, music, lights, etc. Highly recommend.

Contrary to what another reviewer stated, this is anything but a hole in the wall. It’s a beautiful restaurant out in the open but with a great breeze. They grow a lot of the ingredients used in the food in the place itself so organic but not at organic prices 😉. We came for the culinary class with Su who was absolutely amazing and so sweet. She taught us the trick of the trade. We made ceviche, tortilla and quesadilla empanada style. The drinks were incredible, one was provided to us upon arrival and the other one was done by us with the bartender Beto who was also such a great guy. The food was delicious and to top it off we met a reallyyyy special friend, Doditos ♥️ the cutest, friendliest and sweetest doggo.

This place was awesome with just a couple of minor hiccups that can easily be resolved.
Food: DELISH! The amount of food you get for what you pay was totally worth it. I find these ‘farm to table’ restaurants don’t often serve much quantity, but not this place; you get a whole lot here. Quality and flavor alone deserves a 5/5.
Ambiance: Super cute place, good for a date, or a group/family. The décor is really nice, mostly outdoors and spacious. Upon arrival, you may think ‘where the heck am I at’. This place is off the highway and once you turn into the lot, it’s super dark, but as you drive in, you will see lots walking around and other hidden businesses.
Drinks: Tasty but can prob use a little more alcohol. Quality craft cocktails for about $10 USD.
Service: It appeared as though there was just ONE person working that night. I mean considering it was just him (two were helping him serve, but not take orders), it wasn’t the worst. The server whose name I forgot, actually came over and told us service was slow. This is where the hiccup was.
Hiccup #1: Can use an additional server. Although not the slowest, it was slow service. They told me the cornbread I ordered for dinner (under dessert menu) would take some time, but when we inquired 45 min later. They said they were out.
Hiccup #2: The waiter said, and I quote him, “The kitchen is backed up, so let me bring you some chips and guoc. We thought well, that was very nice. He even brought us TWO plates which consisted of chips, guoc, cheese and chicarron (see photo). Well, later, it was on our bill. I asked my hubby to kindly remind the waiter that those two items should be removed, and he said there was no mistake. He said he was bringing us chips and guoc. We prob shouldn’t have assumed, but given he apologized for the slow kitchen, and THEN offered us chips and guoc while we wait for our food, we figured it was complimentary. But no, we paid for BOTH plates. It was just $20 but that’s not the point. Even after mentioning it to him, he just explained and smiled. He did not care to even try to remove the charges.
I would still come back though bc the food is really good.

Food: D. Chips and salsa were terrible. My ceviche was heavy on the citrus. The chicken/leche plates the rest of us got were solid, nothing special. What really pissed us off is that it took forever to get chips and salsa, and they didn't even start making the dinner until after we finished them!?!? We were hungry and the entire experience was way too long with literally only 2 other people at the restaurant.
Service: C. Average. Including wait times here too.
Venue: C. Average, but probably looks really nice at night.
We hated this place, and would not go back.

Atmosphere was a 10/10, though the music choices were a little awkward. Unfortunately, we were not aware there was a prix fixe menu for new years eve. Their social pages indicated one would be available, and it would be available for carry out, but there was no response to my comment on if the regular menu would be available. I also emailed inquiring about this and received no response. Luckily a few things on the regular menu were available. Cocktails were enjoyable, but the appetizer "tuna roll" was not anything resembling what we expected (4 foodies). Neither of the ladies enjoyed the fish, but the pork was good. I myself ordered a picanha steak which had great flavor. Early on I had noticed what I thought was some dirt on our table, but mid-way through the dinner the dirt kept multiplying, and the dirt was also on my shorts. It turns out the multiplying dirt was actually bird poop, which was accumulating on the table. At this point we hadn't been checked on in quite some time and with the addition of the poop I simply wanted to leave. We mentioned it to our server (we never could figure out who our server was), asked to be finished, and instead of apologizing verbally, they offered to move us. We declined, asked to leave, so they cleared the table (not the tablecloth!) and proceeded to bring a bottle of Champaign, which we declined. They THEN brought out shots which we initially declined (they were already poured so we took them) and they finally cleared the tablecloth and brought the bill. Our dessert course never came, and I had to ask for this to be removed from the bill which was a challenge. I appreciated their willingness to try doing something to make us feel better about the situation, but they weren't the right things. One of us could become seriously sick from ingesting avian feces. We left with a $200 USD bill.

My fiancé and I loved our dinner here. No reservation on a Monday and we were seated immediately. The seats were also hella comfortable.
Food was delicious, ambiance was top notch, and prices were reasonable - $20-30 entrees, I thought a fair price for the quality. Service was pretty slow but we didn’t mind, I think we just came at peak time (7pm). Would definitely come here again!

think amazing farm to table food (octopus tacos, burrata with pink mole, filet with an elote sauce, one of the best roasted chickens i’ve had, volcano cake and smoked flan)...now add an Alice in Mexican Wonderland outdoor aesthetic, a cool bar doing innovative craft cocktails & showing old b&w Cantinflas movies, a vintage DeLorean (seriously), a DJ playing stellar deep house & trance AND a sweet black & white pit bull mix patrolling the restaurant and you have a perfect potpourri for eclectic dining. On top of all that Osvaldo was our fave waiter on our trip and the club night in back was a benefit to provide music classes to underprivileged Mexican school children. All in all a great night and Metate has officially been added to El Farallo as our must visit restaurants when in Cabo!

8 of us went to this establishment for dinner. I have been looking for an upscale authentic mexican restaurant ( and I don't mean enchiladas, tacos, etc) ever since the very excellent restaurant La Fonda closed many years ago. I was lead to believe that this was it. Now I am no newby. This was the 23 year continuous year that I have been going to Cabo and I have traveled and tasted the regional cuisines of Mexico from Mexico City to Merida to Oaxaca and beyond since 1980. Well this fell short, though I must admit that the mole on the lengua dish was very good and they were very accomodating to our one gluten free guest. However, the prices are high for the quality and the service was very poor and relatively unattentive.

We were excited based on the glowing reviews online, but the food was overpriced for the quality/quantity and it took over an hour for us to get the food. The most frustrating part, however, was when we ordered dessert. Twenty minutes later, our server shows up with a completely different dessert than the one we'd ordered. He explains that they were out of flan, so he decided to get us something else instead. We thought this was complimentary as a way to make up for the poor service (we watched 5+ parties of people who arrived after us receive their food before we did). Well, they ended up charging us (extra) for the substitution dessert - in other words, the server knew the kitchen didn't have flan but decided not to tell us that at any point before showing up with an already-prepared dessert that we wouldn't have ordered if given the choice. And then we had to pay for it.

Avery nice restaurant in an outdoor setting .My wife had carnitas and with the waiter’s permission she gave the restaurant’s dog the bone (now has a new friend). The wait staff and chef were very accommodating. I asked if I could have chicken with mole and they brought me a small bowl of mole - they should make it a regular menu item. We will be back!

We came here for Christmas dinner. We had the guacamole, fish tacos, tlayuda metate, flan, and cornbread dessert.
They were out of several menu items the day we came, so we did not get everything we desired. Service was sporadic and we often had to repeat our orders to the various waiters checking on us. We waited a very long time after our meal before anyone came to check on us.
The fish tacos were the standout dish.
The location is very beautiful with many patrons taking pictures with the decor, including avocado trees.

Excelente recomendación por parte de unos amigos
El servicio tanto por parte de Braulio Ulises como de Iván EXCELENTE. Muy interesados en satisfacer a sus clientes con explicación extendida y detallada de los platillos así como los orígenes de los ingredientes. La presentación de los platillos extraordinaria y el la combinación de texturas y sabores muy deleitable al paladar.

The service by both Braulio Ulises and Iván EXCELLENT. Very interested in satisfying their clients with an extended and detailed explanation of the dishes as well as the origins of the ingredients. The presentation of the extraordinary dishes and the combination of textures and flavors very delightful to the palate.

Everyone at Metate Cabo was simply AMAZING! They made us feel welcomed they were so attentive and the food we made was amazing. It tasted soooo good and the drinks omg every last one was amazing. If you are in Cabo and you do not come here you are missing out tremendously!!!!!!

Absolutely the best food I ate in the Baja over a two week trip. Amazing setting. Great music. A Chile relleno and steak that changed how I think about both. Ignore the menu. Just ask the staff (especially Alejandro) what’s good and then pet the dogs while you wait. Pair what you’re eating with mezcal drinks and revel in the smokiness of the mesquite grill.
And then eat some flan.

This place was a total surprise! We have ate at some of the most recommended and expensive places in Cabo. This place was delicious and so reasonably priced. Josue, our server was knowledgeable, I would trust him and order whatever he says to (food and drink!)
Will definitely come back when I’m back in town.
