We enjoyed the ambience, with carved wooden furniture and food served on large woven trays. Service was friendly. However, the food was not as good as we've had in other Ethiopian restaurants. The chicken dish, doro wat, included one piece of meat on the bone...(a drumstick?), not meriting the price. The dish arrived without any utensils, as is the tradition, but it was impossible to remove the meat from the bone simply with the injera. The beef stew was spicy but not nuanced in flavour. When the traditional coffee service was provided to another table, the whole restaurant was engulfed in acrid incense smoke.More

The food is very good here, but one of the hostesses was wearing very strong perfume, which at times overpowered the smell of the food. This is never good! Also the incense was very strong when more than one was burning.

This was our first time here, but we have eaten plenty of Ethiopian food here in Calgary and beyond. The food was pretty good, the injera was fresh and light. Some of the meat dishes had bone chips/chunks that we weren't expecting, so beware. The...veggie dishes were quite good. The bunna coffee service involves some incense, and it was overpowering the entire space, with no ventilation. Not good for anyone with allergies or asthma, and quite irritating to the eyes, nose and mouth. So be forewarned about that. The service was very slow and disorganized, but the one server was very kind, so we forgive her! The platter is for 2-4 people, but really meant for 4. They should offer a half-size platter for 1-2 people, at half the price.More

We had a delicious Ethiopian vegan dinner at Abyssinia. As soon as we said we were vegans, the woman told us what we could have. Since this was our first time there while vacationing in Canada, she suggested the vegetable platter for two to share....The platter was not only incredibly delicious but it was also beautiful in presentation. Actually, the amount of food was very generous, and actually one of the platters would have been enough for both of us. No Ethiopian beer the night we were there, but beer tasted very good with the spicy food. Highly recommend if you are in the area.More

We are going to Ethiopia in about a month and I just finished reading The Seventh Scroll (Wilbur Smith), so decided to try some Ethiopian food. Good location with lots of free street parking, but watch time limits. You can sit inside or outside (busy...street though, so beware of exhaust fumes). Functional decor, reasonably comfortable chairs. Both draft beers were not available and two of the three domestic beers were not available either (they ran out the day before). Limited wine list. It would have been nice if we would have been offered a glass for the beer as not everybody likes to drink from the bottle. We started out with the Sinig k`Arya, a jalapeno pepper stuffed with onions, tomatoes and spices. Excellent, but obviously very spicy (try biting in a fresh jalapeno pepper), thus the bottle of water came in handy. I opted for the Beg Wot` a spicy lamb stew. The sauce was excellent, spicy but not overly so. The lamb however was mainly bone and the meat was very chewy. Unsure if this was lamb or its older relative mutton. My wife had the Special Kifto, an Ethiopian steak tartare. Meat was very tasty, however there were some bone fragments that negatively affected the dining experience. Big portions (no need to finish everything as in some parts of Ethiopia, it is impolite to finish your plate as it may indicate you are still hungry). The Injeera (a flatbread with a slightly spongy texture) served both as a serving platter (in a basket) and utensil and was light and thin. You use your hands to eat so plenty of napkins are required. Service was good and friendly, even if it took a while before being served (maybe as Canadians we want our food sooner, not taking into account the African reality). Patrons were mainly Ethiopian and South Sudan. Nice background music.More

I really enjoy Ethiopian cuisine; the spices, the blends, the unique type of foods, but also the eating style - with your hands. It is a very much family style sharing type of food that meant to be eaten socially. If you like variety and...unique tastes then you should definitely try it. Abyssinia has a fantastic menu, with traditional options and a great friendly atmosphere. Service is always with a smile. It does get busy in the evenings.More
