10/10 Nepalese Cuisine

I had dinner tonight at The Himalayan (17 Ave SW). It was my first time here, and only my second Nepalese restaurant I’ve been to. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable and very kind. The restaurant is clean, and intimate. Parking isn’t ideal, but that’s not their fault! I started with the pork momos as an appetizer. They were excellent, but quite expensive ($16 for six regular-sized dumplings). The flavour was great, and they tasted very fresh. For my main, I had Chicken Dal Bhatt, which came with three small dishes of meat and curry and lentils, along with rice, naan and some side dishes. Each of the individual dishes had incredible flavour. They were also hot and fresh, as were the momos. The meal was served on a metal platter, and the small bowls were also metal. It was beautifully presented. As soon as I finished my main meal, the waiter offered me a chai and mango pudding (included in the meal). The chai was aromatic and spicy and earthy and amazing! The mango pudding was icy cold (also in a metal dish), and hit the spot at the end of the meal. For my appetizer and main meal, I opted for mild / zero spice. Everything was so flavourful I don’t regret this decision. However next time, I’ll live a little and try the medium heat. Overall, this was a 10/10 for me and I’m really glad I had the chance to try out this restaurant!!

Himalayan Restaurant.

We went there for a birthday celebration , the food was delicious all our family enjoyed their dinners. Prices were more affordable than many restaurants in Town. We checked reviews on trip advisor & they were correct. The staff were excellent & food .We will be going back very soon again & highly recommend Himalayan Restaurant to everyone. Only negative was limited parking outside..

Great location off 17th Avenue with lots of parking in front. Nicely appointed restaurant with friendly staff - Jon our server was FANTASIC! Friendly, fun and he made great recommendations. I'm pretty sure you'd love everything on the menu, but as this was my first time here, I took his suggestion and ordered the Himalayan Chicken Curry and the Jomsom Chicken dish - both were AMAZING, flavorful and fresh. The portions are perfect - not too much food but certainly enough. I thought the small side of marinaded salad was a bit odd, but it was delicious!! The accompanying warm Nann was crisp, and light. DON'T MISS IT!! Dinner for 2 with a large beer was $48.00, tip generously the staff deserve it!!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Himalayan spice pallet think of an elevated Indian spice pallet. The BBQ Lamb is a bit of heaven although when it first comes out it looks slightly disappointing as it is on plate and consists of roughly 3/4 inch cubes which are all perfectly seasoned and evenly cooked! I could fill up on the Coconut Naan such an improvement over regular Naan. If you are a vegetarian you might be hard pressed to find a dish that you are not going to love! The Nephali Tarkari is out of the world the spinach actually has substance and body (instead of being a green formless mess); I don't know how they managed it. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable.and whiling to make additions to accommodate the different number of guests.

The food was excellent. If you like a bit or a lot spicy you can get it here. The staff is very good at helping with a different sauce if you want something other than spicy. Great size servings and nicely presented. A wonderful Nepali restaurant. Great dinner!!

It is a shame I can’t give this place 6 stars. The food was flavourful, the service was welcoming and I the decor was cozy yet stylish. I had the Tofu Tareko to start. The tofu was crisp on the outside and delightfully moist on the inside; it was everything that I desire when I bite into some ‘meaty’ tofu. The mango sauce that comes with it is gently sweet with a bit of kick from the mustard, that makes it perfect for dipping. As a main I enjoyed the Jomsom Veges. The veggies were excellently salted and wonderfully smoky. The cabbage was cooked to perfection allowing the natural sweetness to ooze out and the cauliflower sopped up the all flavour allowing for flavour explosions. While the saffron rice paired nicely with the dish. This place clearly had all the vegan elements labeled making it super accessible for vegans. The service was stellar; he was always ready to lend a hand and help us out but he was never intrusive. I look forward to returning

This is an excellent restaurant with delicious food. It is different from any other cuisine that I have tried and is fascinating. The varied flavours make for an excellent meal. Everything I have tried has been great, never disappointed. I have been going since they opened and they have achieved great success so a reservation is probably a good idea. It is deservedly highly rated

Outstanding Meal, Service, Value, Comfort

This was our first visit to this restaurant since before covid19 hit in March 2020. My title sums it up but what a wonderful experience again after having mostly avoided sit-in dining for so long. We ordered their special, Dal Bhat and while my spouse and I typically order individual dishes at restaurants I’m glad we went for this full meal. We had the lamb instead of chicken curry or paneer.p, it was very tasty. The dal and saag were delightful too, as were all the foods, ending with a beautiful desser dish of mango rice. Yummy! While some reviewers commented on the small portions we found that they were perfectly sized for us and for $25 it was very well priced. If you are a big eater you could of course always add another dish or more. Service was prompt, courteous and friendly, couldn’t ask for it to have been better. The room is very tasteful decorated, the seating was comfortable and the room nice and warm, What an atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back again, looking forward to taking our adult children there when we can.

Nice staff, comfortable family atmosphere. A mix of south and east Asian dishes although Indian influences seem to dominate. We curried lamb and shrimp and it was well prepared and presented.

Third Time is the Charm

It had been a few years since our last visit so we decided to give it another try. Our server John was truly an amazing server, flitting between tables and somehow speaking to all of his customers seemingly all at once. We started with the dumplings. They were good but not as good as the rest of the meal, We asked John to bring us two dishes of his choosing, as well as Naan and rice. One that he brought was a spicy curried prawn dish and the other was a chicken stirfry. The flavours here are about as bold as they can get. Absolutely delicious. In addition he brought us a basket of coconut Naan bread that was absolutely to die for. Fantastic!!! A great meal for sure.

The food quality is amazing. The staff are amazing. This place is always spotless clean. Service is beyond unreal. The food is bang on. Been coming here weekly for years. It is truly the best ethnic food in the city.Theres a reason reservations can be booked a week before one can get in. NOTE!!!!! Anyone leaving a poor review is doing so out of malice. Don't listen. I saying this as a consistent customer who with the 85 percent of people who come here how good the entire experience is. These people are the nicest family.

The Himalayan is our go-to spot when we want a special meal either as a couple or with friends! The food is delicious and the service is exceptional. Highly recommend the Dal Bhat! It gives you a variety of different things to try, and the mango rice pudding is divine.

Quality Delicious Cuisine With Excellent Service

This restaurant is superb in every way. It's clean, friendly, authentically Nepalese (I'm no expert) and consistently satisfying. They are located in a strip mall, but the furnishings and art really do transport you to their magical land. The food is quality - it's flavourful and delicious and we personally prefer quality over quantity, yet we always leave pleasantly full. We love the Lamb Grill and Dal Bhat also with lamb, and the curry sauce with the lamb is sensational! Tonight John was our server and if he happens to read this, we just wanted to say thanks for a super enjoyable evening. We genuinely hope they never sell or move.

Enjoyable Meal

My wife and sister ordered the New Zealand lamb grill and were very impressed. The meal was plentiful, delicious and well presented. The lamb was tender and cooked just right. I had the Himalayan chicken curry and enjoyed it. It wasn’t as plentiful as the other meals but was good for me. We also had excellent service.

Affordable Superb Meal

This is a family owned nicely decorated restaurant. We picked it depending on its rating in trip advisor. We wanted to try a new cuisine and this was a great choice. The service was great and friendly. The meals were so delicious. We ordered the himalayan lamb, the butter chicken, the mango chicken with coconut rice and the Dal Bhat lamb, which was so good. For tried the mango rice pudding, the Himalayan Cake & the mango ice cream for dessert. The total bill for 4 with dessert was around $100... very reasonable for AB standard. There is a reason this is in the top 5 in Calgary... and I guess it is consistency in service and affordable delicious food.
