We had Doro Wat (chicken), Inguday Tibs (salad), Spinach & Potato plus a beer and glass of wine. Interesting how the food was served. The Chicken (Doro Wat) was excellent. They were out of a couple of dishes we wanted to try specifically the beet...vegy dish. The food is very filling.More

We were very excited to try the Marathon Ethiopian Restaurant in Kensington with our friends. While they had frequented the restaurant in the past, we had never been. I looked on line in advance to see the menu and decide before hand what I would...like to have for dinner. Lamb - my favourite. Our reservation was for 7:00 pm. The restaurant was unassuming but welcoming and smelled delicious. We ordered drinks and chatted comfortably for a few minutes until the server was ready to take our order. Unfortunately, they did not have any lamb. Not any, for any of their lamb dishes. So I ordered a sizzling shrimp dish. Our hosts chose several Ethiopian dishes which sounded delicious and they were, once they actually arrived. We enjoyed each others company which was a good thing because our meals did not arrive until nearly 9:00 pm. Sitting as we did near the kitchen we observed order after order go out the door via the Skip the Dishes delivery person. It was not until that delivery rush ended that our meals were prepared.Once the food actually arrived it was quite tasty, if a bit over saturated in butter. But by then we were so hungry no one complained. Perhaps diners received priority at lunch. But our experience for dinner was that Skip the Dishes comes first.More

I was born in Uganda and lived in Tanzania for many years. I love everything Africa and the Marathon Restaurant is no exception. The food is fabulous. The service is great. The prices are fine. I have eaten here many times and I love it.

You want Ethiopia, then this is a great place to try out in Calgary. I have eaten Tibs, siro, Injera around the world, and its nice to see that we have a good spot in Calgary.

I gave the 3 stars for the good service we received. The food was disappointing. It was bland, lacking of spices and salt.

I am not an expert on Ethiopian food. All I can say is that what we ate was delicious, and that the waiter, a member of the family that owns and runs the restaurant, was very friendly. There were three of us so we shared...two appetizers and the combination meat/vegan platter (for three). We loved the experience of eating with our hands, using the spongy Ethiopian flatbread. It was the first time my two friends ate Ethiopian and their experience exceeded the high expectations I set for them.More

This is a wonderful, family-run restaurant with authentic decor and great food. As a vegetarian it is nice to have a full platter of options, with each as delicious as the next. Service is friendly, especially the young waiter, Nahom.

The first time I ate here end April with family who are regulars at a similar-looking charming Ethiopian restaurant in Boston, we really enjoyed the exotic ambiance and of course the food, but on June 30 our dinner for 3 was really disappointing. We found...out that the food had been prepared in advance- we think at least one day or more earlier- as we were virtually the only diners at 7:15 p.m, ( they said the Rush was over) - and as is typical in countries where refrigeration is not always available, an excessive amount of salt had been added to each component of our platter. One friend felt ill even before we had finished eating ( but later said he felt obliged to eat to be polite!), We ate what we could and left, but next morning, he went to his doctor who explained why the excessive addition of salt in hot countries, to preserve meat and other foods. Too bad- I would have liked to do a more encouraging review but there was a great difference between the first meal I had end April 2018 and this one end June!More

My spouse is Ethiopian and he loves the food here. We have been here numerous times and the food has always been great, fresh and home-made tasting! Truly authentic. Wonderful service and the decor makes you feel like you’re sitting in a restaurant right from...Addis Ababa!More
