Two friends and I tried this restaurant for the first time. It's been open only about six months and is in an upmarket neighbourhood south of the river, not far from the major university. Apparently the building used to be an Italian restaurant---hence, the now...out-of-place-looking Classical columns inside! Although it was lunch, Coriander remained fairly empty while we were there. Other than a sprinkling of patrons in this quite large space, there was a trio of older Indian men who seemed to be regulars.
The interior decor is quite stark and spartan (very un-Indian, which usually has lush, warm decoration featuring exotic themes). Not much except for a few unexciting photo-murals on the walls, and some strange-looking flashing lights changing different colours every few seconds. Our waiter was pleasant and obliging but nervous and over-attentive, which led me to think that he was new.
As for the food: I love southern Indian vegetarian food, especially the long, torpedo-shaped masala dosas. I ordered one of those, and it came with the traditional accompaniments: sambar (a south Indian lentil soup) and two chutneys (one cool and one spicy). The dosa was just okay (not enough filling)---I've had better ones elsewhere. I also wanted an appetizer, so chose the Dahi Batata Puri---puffy shells filled with riced potatoes topped with a sweetish yoghurt. That was a mistake! They tasted somewhat like Rice Krispies, and my friends also didn't like them. I asked my friends about their food choices. One ordered the Fish Molee cooked in coconut milk. (Not sure what type of fish it was.) She thought it was not too bad, but not exciting. We all agreed that the best part of it was the sauce---a rich coconut and lemony blend. My other friend ordered the Kerala fish curry. She said it was quite good and it had a lot of coriander leaves sprinkled over it. Fortunately, she likes coriander. (Many people don't!)
But the outstanding item that we ordered was the garlic naan bread. I've never tasted naan better than this one---buttery, herby and oozing that garlic flavour!
I would suggest going to Coriander Cuisine, look at the extensive menu, order one or two dishes, but really fill up on their garlic naan. It's a meal in itself! I hesitated in my rating between "Average" and "Very Good." An in-between rating of "Good" would have been more fitting but unfortunately it's not one of the categories to choose from.More
