It was nice to finally visit Vedder Sushi again, albeit in takeout form due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, after an absence of almost exactly 5 years. Between 2013 and 2015 I patronized this establishment quite regularly with the family and recall it being quite...tasty, so I was rather anxious to see what, if anything, had changed in the intervening half decade. To facilitate a proper comparison, I ordered many of the same items that used to be favourites in yesteryear: Tempura, Chicken Karaage, Feta Cheese Roll, and Magic Tuna Roll. I’d also ordered the prawn & scallop skewers; however, these were forgotten and I wasn’t charged for them so I won’t cry over spilled milk. Appetizer Tempura: One of the pitfalls of tempura at many sushi establishments is the greasy texture and oil they’re often soaked in. This, I find, ruins the flavour and practically eliminates any crunch the tempura batter may have. Thankfully, this is not the case with Vedder Sushi’s tempura. It is light and crisp and there’s no oily aftertaste. Even in takeout form, the tempura manages to maintain its integrity thanks to thoughtful “breathing holes” punctured in the takeout container. Magic Tuna Roll: This “appetizer” sushi roll is bright and colourful thanks to the confluence of sauces and vibrant side salad. Described as being a “deep fried roll with tuna, veg, avocado, [and] cucumber,” this sushi role highlights Vedder Sushi’s nod to traditionalism complemented with the modern. I appreciated the light sear on the tuna and felt it worked well with the fresher elements of the dish. In many respects, this item reminded me of Vedder’s fantastic “Alaska Roll,” which uses smoked salmon in a traditional California Roll. Spicy Chicken Karaage: This dish was a perennial favourite of mine and is perhaps the one I was most looking forward to eating again. In short, I wasn’t disappointed. The karaage had a light crispness to it – as any proper chicken karaage should – and the sauce it was slathered in gave it both an attractive deep red colour + nice “kick” of spice. The accompanying side salad with orange segments further added to the bright and invigorating colour of the dish. Feta Cheese Roll: This roll is one of Vedder’s “specialties” and is a literal piece de resistance. Featuring a beautiful mix of feta cheese, BBQ beef, yam, crabmeat and mystery special sauce, this roll epitomizes what innovation in a sushi restaurant can be in that it combines unconventional ingredients (beef and yam) with those elements of sushi that make it a form of art: symmetry, finite execution, bright & vibrant colours, and elevated flavours. Seriously, this roll shouldn’t really work on paper, but it is a true thing of beauty. FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 4/5 RECOMMENDATION: I’m glad that my Vedder Sushi experience lived up to pre-existing expectations. Everything ordered was on point and the rolls still highlighted that innovative edge Vedder Sushi is known for. If you’re in the Chilliwack area, I do recommend you consider giving this place a try! We decided to try out some sushi options in Chilliwack for lunch. Vedder Sushi came up right away, as my partner has told me good things about this restaurant. Sadly, we did not get to dine in as they only operate on take-out for now...amidst the pandemic. Nonetheless, we picked out some of their more popular dishes to enjoy some sushi lunch. Their dish serving is quite large so we were pleasantly surprised. The service staff was quick and courteous all throughout from ordering ahead to picking up our take out. The establishment was clean and followed pandemic precautions as well. Our starter was Appetizer Tempura - the right light batter on a couple of prawns and veggies were good. We added Chicken Teriyaki - the sauce is good and the chicken flesh had the right firmness for the dish and the side salad with the sauce has some crispness on them. The sushi rolls we ordered were Magic Tuna and Feta Cheese Roll, both of which are apparently popular at this here sushi joint. The tuna fish was seared and partially cooked that complimented the light batter and the other ingredients of the sushi roll. The Feta Cheese Roll was a hit - and a handful to finish. Its taste was very good, surprisingly made with feta cheese, crab meat, BBQ beef, yam, and barbeque sauce - they all blended so well together. A total surprise as you wouldn't think beef would work well in such a roll. While we enjoyed our lunch snack, we were unable to finish the generous rolls; however, we did bring them to a family function later on and they was a hit!!! I hoped we could have seen how these dishes would be plated as part of the experience - but we understand the take out limitations the restaurant had at that time. We will probably go back here in a dine-in experience someday.More

Just received our second Skip the Dishes delivery from Vedder Sushi. The Chicken Teriyaki, soup and rice was delivered Luke warm at best. We are only 5 mins away and it was delivered on time so it wasn’t the drivers fault. This is the second...time this has happened and it will be the last.More

Very poor service. We were seated at 8:10pm, they close at 9:00 pm. The server told us to ‘hurry up’ in ordering as the kitchen is closing, she literally gave us 5 min to order. We felt very pressured to leave at 9:00 pm exact!...So we packed our food and left and ate the food in our campsite. Unpleasant experience! The food was good but soured by the service.More

On a date night we try them all. We’ve been disappointed with our first visit to VS in sometime. An attractive building in a lot. We were expecting much more inside but pretty jammed. Sadly their service has turned to more take out than traditional...Japanese table service. Right, it’s not Japanese! It’s Korean run now. The foods we had were average and one appy, fried oyster was more than fried. Below average service, with average food. Maybe take out is betterMore

If you are in the mood for some phenomenal sushi you have found the place to go! I was completely amazed when I stopped by to get some take out. First of all the menu is huge, so many amazing choices! Secondly every single thing...I had was perfect, both in flavour and artistic flare. The special rolls are deliciously unique and beautifully plated! The staff is very friendly and efficient, also generous. The atmosphere is nice, spacious and could be a formal experience, but isn't so fancy you would feel out of place in a hippy dress. I can't wait to go back! Tonight 😉....More
