Ah, the Greek Island Restaurant (#2)! When I lived in Chilliwack some twenty years ago, this establishment would be a regular “go to” for the family when they wanted a reasonably priced quality meal. I have many a fond memory of coming here, ordering the...saganaki, watching the show (flaming of the cheese), and hearing OPA! It was, indeed, good times in a fun environment. Much to my chagrin, after moving from the Valley, my visits to the Greek Island were very few and far between (in fact, up until now, I hadn’t dined at this location since 2002, and only ever dined at the Greek Island in Abbotsford – South Fraser Way location – once in 2011). Thus, when the opportunity arose to come here again, after nearly two decades, I jumped at the offer. It would doubtless be a wonderful dose of nostalgia and good eats!
In any event, our party of 6 arrived in time for our 7:15PM reservation. The first thing I noticed? The Greek Island has obviously been updated and renovated since my last visit nearly 20 years ago – something hardly surprising given the lengthy time interval (and a quick Google search reveals that these renos are fairly new!). The revised look certainly elevates one’s experience at Greek Island while concomitantly playing nicely with the fun and casual vibe of place and space.
We ordered a host of items from the menu. For appetizers: Dolmades, Saganaki (2 orders), Ouzo prawns, Greek Chicken Wings, and Scallops & Bacon. For our mains, we decided upon: Greek Ribs, Lasagne, Greek Platter for 2 and the Seafood Platter for 2. Without getting overly wordy, I will say that each and every one of the appetizers were tasty and met all expectations. The Dolmades and Chicken Wings, in particular, were a nice surprise. The saganaki, while good, came across flat in terms of the “show” aspect. The flame atop the cheese was a little sad and didn’t leave us yelling OPA!
With respect to the main dishes, they were also very good. We especially enjoyed the accompanying Greek salad – the dressing is what makes this so noteworthy. It is slightly creamy, but the flavours do not overpower the vibrant veggies in the salad (you can also buy the house-made dressing if you feel so inclined). Our 2 share platters, which came with a bit of everything from the sea and Greece, respectively, left us full and hardly able to breathe! However, I do have one criticism – and it’s one that actually stands from my 2011 Abbotsford visit: The platters come with way too much rice. There’s easily enough rice to feed 4 or more people on this platter meant for 2. Maybe consider reducing the amount of rice? I think it would make the platters – Seafood and Greek – a lot more balanced.
After our mountain of food, we did spare a little room for dessert. I ordered the Tiramisu while others tried the Cheesecake. I did not sample the cheesecake but, by all accounts, it was good. My tiramisu? Well, it was fine – certainly not the best I’ve had (the award there goes to Ithaka). I found the tiramisu here at Greek Island to be a little dry.
Finally, a brief comment upon the service: Our server – I forget his name – was easily a big part of our successful meal. He was incredibly helpful in making suggestions and he even assisted my elderly grandfather towards the washroom. Very kind and he should be commended for that!
FOOD: 4/5
SERVICE: 5/5
VALUE: 4/5
RECOMMENDATION: Well, after nearly 20 years away from the Chilliwack Greek Island (#2), I must say it was nice to be back. The atmosphere, service and food all came together in a wonderful way to make for a memorable meal. It is little wonder Greek Island has remained a popular place in the Fraser Valley for well over two decades. Highly recommended!
