Nori has been a successful restaurant for several years, but its recent renovations make a great place even better. Expect to wait for a table or for a seat at the sushi bar, at any time of day. That's because the food here is certainly the best in BC. It's not pretentious like some of the sushi joints in Vancouver. It's noisy and busy, but the service is prompt and the food simply cannot be beaten for quality, flavour, presentation.

I travel a lot and I have to say this is one of best Japanese restaurants on the island! The menu is enormous and full of so many different creations, combos, noodles and of course amazing sushi. Everything is always fresh and beautifully plated. The chef is always upbeat and friendly to every guest that enters and leaves and I love sitting at the bar and chatting to him as he makes the experience even better. I had to take 1/2star away though just do to the fact that none of the service staff ever smile or look happy being there which I why I prefer to be sat at bar. And another 1/2 star because they took my favorite item which is bento box off dinner menu. Other then that I highly highly recommend this place to anyone that is in or visits nanaimo.

We had another "intoxicating" (according to my husband) sushi dining at Nori's. Their appetizers are good too. Today we enjoyed Dancing Prawns and Scallops, a dozen of fresh raw oysters (the sauces that come with them are amazing), torched tuna and pesto oshi sushi, and Hamachi Kama. All superbly done. They have many cold sakes to choose from. We tried sake flight the last time we came, so today we ordered the cold sake that we liked from the flight. Then we moved on to owner chef John's nigiri sushi. When we go to Nori's we go specifically to eat the nigiri sushi that John makes; beautifully presented, fresh (especially the fresh of the day), good sushi rice, the balance of the amount of the sushi rice to the fish is perfect. If you can splurge, we recommend ordering the fresh wasabi. We both feel so lucky that Nanaimo has this amazing sushi chef. We have lived in San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver (after moving away from Japan) before we moved to the island a couple years ago. At each city, we had good sushi chefs. And John is par with those fabulous sushi chefs who supported our picky sushi cravings in the past. Thank you John! We are retirees now and since when we go to sushi bar, we eat and drink with no limits. So we have only been able to eat at Nori's at our special occasions.. yet each time we sit at his sushi bar, John welcomes us like a long time friend. I think that he is truly a kind and generous person on top of being a great sushi chef. We look forward to years of eating his sushi now living on this beautiful island.

Food is good, consistent, but sometimes has a greasy aftertaste. Tables tightly packed, acoustics horrid. Almost impossible to have a conversation during peak times; tables too close for any discrete conversations. Waitresses attentive, service from kitchen can be inconsistent: immediate to very long wait.

Nori has always been my favourite sushi spot in Nanaimo. Their sushi is hands down the best. The problem is not the sushi it’s the poor management. Their hours are all over the place and have been for a few years now. I called to order sushi for pick up at 6pm the girl on the phone proceeded to tell me that because they were busy they were not accepting anymore pick up orders for the rest of the day. This is ridiculous I could see if I was calling half an hour before close but 6pm…really??? I’m seriously considering never going there again clearly they are making so much money they can turn down business so I’ll take my business to someone who appreciates it. Unfortunately, it’s been one thing after another and if the sushi wasn’t so good I would have moved on years ago.

The Bento Box we ordered for lunch was the best we've ever had. The deep-fried tuna-wrap was unique to Nori. The salad dressing was delicious. On occasion, we've ordered one box and two rolls and other times, 2 bento boxes for 3 adults. Both options are more than enough food and all for less than $50. Reservations recommended and definitely required. We went for a mid-week lunch at 1:15pm and there was still a line up for those who didn't book ahead.

Many friends had told us that this was the sushi place to go to. After having lunch there I would say the sushi is only fair. The tray of food is beautifully presented but the sushi I found was very bland. This, in addition to the effort required even to get a table is not worth it. Also, they do not answer their phones and it was impossible to get a takeout order time on their website.

We ate here tonight while waiting for ferry to go back to Vancouver. This is by far the best Japanese food in the Island. It beats even the best in Victoria. It was very busy. But they took our name and contact detail and texted us once the table is ready. It was about 25 mins though we were told it would be about 45 mins. So don’t be put off it was worth the wait! The service was quite good taking into account that it was a very busy night. We had chasu ramen. We have Japanese cuisine very frequently being residing in Lower Mainland and frequent visit to Japan. We don’t usually eat ramen in a non ramen restaurant. But it was a cold night and we felt like some hot ramen before having cold sushi! Ramen was surprisingly good and the Chasu was flavourful. The aburi raft came on a big board with five pieces of four different aburi sushi. The ingredient was generous, more than the usual thin layer on top of the sushi rice. They were beautifully arranged on the board. I suspect this maybe a Korean and not Japanese owned restaurant nevertheless the food was fresh and great. This is now our to go place in all future visits. Just a slight note re Covid precautions: Seats were very tightly packed with little space between diners, that made us slightly uncomfortable. I have to walk around to the front desk to get sanitizer after using the washroom as the one in the washroom was empty.

Excellent sushi as always. ordered online for take out. Food is excellent as always. The online instructions are not correct. You are asked to text upon arrival model of vehicle and food delivered to vehicle. After texting and waiting 10 min decided to phone Nori. I’m then told to go to side door to pick up? I understand that during Covid guidelines in place but online needs to be updated to reflect customers need to puck up at side door . Other than that the food was amazing and just as fresh as sitting in restaurant.

I’ve tried the lobster miso and the aburi lobster tail. They were ok. Won’t order next time. The lobster tail was kind of raw. I had really fresh raw lobster sashimi before, they taste really sweet, but not these ones. Lobster is still best served with very little sauces and spices. It just masked the true taste of the seafood. The nori seaweed of the scallop handroll was Soggy. That’s a number one, “No, No” in any form of sushi making. The seaweed should be crispy fresh. Sorry, you’ve failed on that very badly. The kitchen food, unagi don, was well presented. The mushroom was way too sweet though. Tamago on the side was not traditional type of tamago that I’d prefer. So, I give it a 3 star. Dessert: I had the sesame icecream with fried pancake. It didn’t say tempura pancake on the menu, so it threw me off a bit. But taste-wise, it’s acceptable. Sorry, I’m being a bit harsh as a foodie critic. But that’s just my opinion. Still, these guys are quite creative in their dishes. Something special in Nanaimo. I would still come back. But there are lots of room to get a notch up.

You don't just come here for the food, you come here for the experience. We had the grilled Tuna along with many other rolls and they flame seared the tuna right on your table. Everything we had was amazing and they are so creative with rolls I've never seen anywhere else like the Black Angus Tenderloin or pressed Sushi or smoked Unagi bowl. You just have to go see for yourself and I can't wait to go back and try different ones. My fussy kid loved the rice, tempura prawns and California rolls.

This restaurant has a lively atmosphere and stupendous sushi. Well-priced, generous and flavourful, this restaurant is a must when in Nanaimo. You can’t beat regionally sourced fresh fish that’s artfully presented and thoughtfully prepared.

Decided to get take out from here on our way to the cabin. We phoned our order in. Our first clue should of been that they disconnected us three times by accident. We were hungry and heard this place was good so we called back each time. When our order was finally placed they said pick it up in 15-20 minutes. When we arrived 20 minutes later they said it would be another 30 minutes for it to be ready. Not at all what they said earlier! Then 30 minutes later they said it was ready and they were packing it up,and asked us to pay. I paid and then waited another 30 minutes to get the food. One hour and twenty minutes from the initial call. When we ate it it was terrible. Gyoza was cold and rubbery and very small. The assortment of rolls was warm and did not taste fresh at all. We ate only a few and then threw it all out fearing we would get sick. Do yourself a favour, go to McDonald’s instead ! It’s cheaper ,fresher and you won’t feel like throwing up. Also every individual that came to the take out window that worked there was clued out!

We've dined here many times over the past years and while expensive, the quality and service was exemplary compared to other Japanese restaurants on Vancouver Island. Currently, the place is a big disappointment. The key staff has turned over and gone is the attention to culinary detail. There is no longer a fresh sheet. Bones, veins, and scales are commonplace in the sushi, and there is no consistency from one chef to another. More importantly, the place is not clean. Check out the dark fingerprints on the cupboards, and the dirty film on the refrigeration glass at the bar. Washrooms are often out of order and not appropriately stocked. The business model seems to have changed - take-out is now the focus. Such a shame, this was a favourite.

We did dinner take out for Nori (if you go in person you have more menu options.) We ordered spicy tuna roll and sashimi, some assorted veggie rolls, fried tofu and Tokyo Udon (full of fish, very tasty broth, comes with 3 sweet potato tempura on the side, very crispy) Portions are generous: we had enough for leftovers for lunch the next day. Highly recommended by our Airbnb host!
