Decided to go for lunch on our way back from being down Island for a few days. Certainly glad we took the time to do so - only the patio is open and it is a wonderful and peaceful setting. The staff is very friendly and efficient. I had the Oyster Po Boy and sure glad I did, my wife had the Beef Dip - both were ‘very’ healthy portions and delicious. They were busy and seating is limited so you need to arrive early or be patient.

This unique Island restaurant always offers the best specials ,worth trying, and the Robbie Burns night did not disappoint! The Haggis scotch eggs were absolutely delicious! Even if you are the person who may cringe at the thought of Haggis, this dish is great for you to “ give it a try “. Perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented, and of course, as many dishes are at the Crow and Gate , plentiful! The Scotch broth was so aromatic with flavour, it made you excited to enjoy it. Dessert was an authentic Scottish dessert known as Cranachan. This dessert, traditionally, is not a sweet dessert, but a refreshing dessert to end your dining experience with. I hope the Grow and Gate will continue to make Robbie Burns night an annual treat for its diners. If you are looking for the “ whole experience “, this would be the place to go! I have said this often over the last year and I will say it again..” it just keeps getting better and better and kudos to the kitchen and staff for always making my visits worth it. I highly recommend trying the specials, as I find them pleasantly surprising and delicious. I know I will be going back for the Scotch eggs!.. The only thing I would suggest to this restaurant is to advertise their specials more often and encourage the serving staff to promote specials in a positive way.

If you have someone visiting that you’d like to impress, the Crow and Gate is THE place for lunch or dinner. Sure, you have to queue up at the bar to order your meal and your drink.... but then take a seat in this most British of pubs, or in the warm months go outside to a garden setting fit for a wedding. I think I’ve tried everything on the menu board, and have never been disappointed. My personal favourites are the pan-fried Oysters with a fresh green salad and a scoop of good potato salad. It’s a toss-up between those perfectly done Oysters it their beef dip. It’s huge and one of the best I’ve ever had. This amazing setting has delightful patient staff too. It is always busy, and they do their best to give you a memorable experience. You will love this outing, and become a regular straightaway.

The Crow and Gate is back with patio seating and table service while the main restaurant stays closed. The grounds, as usual, are beautiful. We stopped for lunch and waited only briefly for a table. The picnic tables are quite large and can seat a party of 6 -8, but because of Covid, most tables had two sitting at them. We got drinks fairly quickly and gave our food order at the same time (soup and hot sandwich) then sat back and waited...and waited. An honest 50 minutes later, our food arrived. The potato salad was awful and the soup was luke warm, but the beef dip was fine so we ate without complaint. I'm happy that one of our 'go to' places has re-opened, but sad that the restaurant is struggling with its new service. I hope they are able to get things back on track.

This place is a treasure. Great atmosphere, fireplaces in winter, garden in summer. The quality of the food however is out of balance with the premises - while not always disappointing, it never impresses. Has had the same menu since the 1970s.

We came during prime lunch hour and waited on a beautiful sunny but chilly day for about 20 minutes outside. They will call you by phone when the table was ready. Lots of gravel parking, and beautiful property on the grounds. Our burgers were delicious and you had a choice of sides like salads, potato salad or roasted potatoes. Great service.

Love this place. The atmosphere is great and you'll want to get a drink straight away, whether sitting indoors or outside on the patio surrounded by beautiful gardens. The inside is like an old tavern and very cozy. The food is very consistent and theres a great selection of classic English pub food. Drink selection is also decent. Great place to get a burger, pub plate, beef dip, oysters, etc. Definitely a favourite and always will be.

We decided to give it another change. Last time, the food was mediocre, service not great, but lovely location. Today, our food was almost not even edible and the service was terrible. They were friendly, just inadequate. No one knew who ordered what outside. Different servers kept bringing dishes to random tables with wrong orders. The drink selection is a joke. They don't carry any coolers, ciders or even any flavoured vodka's. We waited 40 minutes for salt and pepper after we asked 3 people. Got it ourselves. The bread in my shrimp sandwich tasted like it had freezer burn and the shrimp was the poorest quality, salty, horrible shrimp I've ever had. NEVER AGAIN.

This pub has a beautiful setting with an English garden, to go with the English decor and some English menu items. What makes this only 3 stars was poor service and that I was unable to get the menu item I really really wanted. The alternative was OK.

The entrance is quaint, the gate, the arbor really nice. It was a hussling place with great ambiance. My sister and I ordered a sandwich each. After an hour and a 15 minutes we had to ask if our lunch was coming. Obviously our server had forgotten to hang up our order since she didn’t emerge again until she finally brought our food to the table. The salmon chowder and oyster stew was delicious as was our sandwiches but put off by the fact she didn’t acknowledge the wait time. It is an out of the way place and was really nice otherwise. I suggest if you don’t get your food in half an hour you might have to ask if it’s being made. Sad to make such a mediocre review.

This has become a place to stop with my family while traveling up and down the island (usually returning from an outdoor adventure). We stopped just before Christmas, when we had excellent Christmas pudding (as their seasonal dessert), great beer, and delicious food. The salad dressing on their green salad is amazing, the beef dip was stacked high, and the potato salad hit the spot. The staff was friendly and everything was brought out efficiently (which was great because we were super hungry). I love the old wooden booths, low ceilings and fire-place which give it a cozy feeling in the winter. Stop by when you are travelling next. I wish this could be my neighbourhood pub.

We ordered steak and mushroom pie for a take out meal. When we opened it we thought we had the wrong order it looked like soup. The pastry was a limp disk in a separate package. The pie content was pale, more like a thinking chicken soup served in a soup container We went back thinking we had the wrong order but no apparently that’s how they serve it for take away. Quite honestly not good enough. Very poor value.

We visit this English pub frequently because it is local and truly unique. The fireplace seating is great in the winter, contrasted by the colourful garden area in summer. Bring your camera for a super photo op in the garden. The farmer's plate and ploughman's plate are favourites, also the salmon chowder. Service is walk-up with an app for your phone. The atmosphere is lively and friendly. A perfect stop-over for cyclists from up Vancouver Island.

Driving up to the Crow & Gate Pub is a meandering driveway where along side you can see beautiful horses grazing in a field. The grounds are immaculate with a scattering of English style buildings. The pub itself is a pleasant surprise, in the context that, because of the surroundings, I expected a high end restaurant but found a downhome pub, which contained separate rooms including one with a working wood fireplace. I ordered the pot pie, chowder and a Caesar salad. Expecting the food to match the build up I was disappointed. The pie was lukewarm to room temperature and the potatoes in the top end of the salt spectrum chowder were undercooked. On a positive note, the salad was good as well as the pint of Guinness. I might return for a pint and the atmosphere, but not for the food.
