As authentic as you're going to find in northern BC. Excellent selection of breads and savories along side a huge selection of sweet treats. They also carry a variety of condiments from Germany. No credit card but accepts debit with tap.
Having previously lived in Prince George for a good half decade, I thought I knew all the city’s mainstay eateries. Thus, when my partner looked up restaurants to try during a recent visit, I was quite surprised to learn about the Pastry Chef. I was...even more flabbergasted to learn that the establishment has been serving the city since 1955. Where the heck was I? I lived here for 5 years – longer if you include my “part time” stint – and yet I’d never heard of this place? How can that be? After all, PookyCake is a lover of delightful baked treats. Obviously I must’ve had some kind of shade over my eyes. This was indeed a major flub on my part, but one that would soon be amended thanks to my partner’s keen eye and great suggestion.
We eventually made our way to the Pastry Chef after a day of shopping. I mean, what better way to end the day than with some sweet treats, right!? Anyhow, the bakery is fairly unassuming – one might even say bland; however, what it lacks aesthetically is more than made up for with the vast array of European, North American and Asian-inspired treats. Even though it was rather late in the day, the Pastry Chef still had a fair amount of goods on offer. It took us a while to make our selections . . . we would’ve loved to take a sample of each item, but that would’ve been overkill! After a bit of back-and-forth, we selected one slice each of: Bavarian Raspberry Cake, German Cheesecake, Orange-Mandarin Cheesecake, All-Whipped Cream slice, and a Japanese meringue cookie.
All in all, we enjoyed our selections. The Bavarian Raspberry was a favourite. It had a beautiful presentation; the raspberry flavour sang throughout the cake; it wasn’t overly sweet, nor was it heavy. The Orange-Mandarin Cheesecake was also light. I appreciated that the orange-mandarin flavour permeated the cheesecake, offering a slight citrusy tang. The German Cheesecake was a bit heavy, but that’s the nature of this type. The All-Whipped was just as it sounds: Light, creamy and very rich. The gram crumble offered a nice contrast to the cream, but I’m not too sure I’d get this one again. It looked pretty, but was quite “heavy” as far as richness goes. Finally, the Japanese meringue cookie was probably my least favourite of all the items we tried. It was basically sweet on sweet, which I don’t particularly care for.
RECOMMENDATION: Well, if you want fresh baked goods, be it bread or sweets, the Pastry Chef should be on anybody’s short-list in Prince George. The offerings are diverse and blow store-bought goods out of the water. Recommended!

Many good deserts, donuts are the best in town. The bread is so much better than store bought, you can taste that it is bakery fresh. Staff is always friendly. No complaints but I do wish they did have one cheesy/herb bread option.
Was downtown today and stopped in at the bakery .... omg .... what an astounding array of choices! We got a few selections and each was more delicious than the next .... the meringue melted in my mouth!! WOW .... I mean it was lovely
