The happy hour runs until 6:30 which is quite unusual in my neighbourhood and we were quite pleased to give it a try. The menu several selections with the reduced happy hour rate and the wine by the glass (also at a reduced rate of $6.50) was of a nicer quality than most places we've visited. We shared the prawn tempura which was cooked light and crispy and not at all oily; it was really great. The dynamite roll was super fresh, and our favourite being the crispy tuna sandwich was so tasty, we'll return just to have it again.
The staff were super friendly and attentive and we felt safe and distanced from others while sitting on the patio under the heaters.

I have not gone out for Japanese for months because of COVID-19. There is heated covered patio seating which is great. We enjoyed so many good items: fish neck, wagyu beef, scallop sushi, assorted tempura, salmon sashimi and unagi roll.

First, Sakana seems to have become a cult Japanese bistro; the night we went, it was packed even though it was mid-week. Second, the food was just as good as before 2020. Third, it is a small place, and when crowded, might not be ideal for those aware of social distancing. But such an inventive menu, and such delicate preparation!

Smack in the middle of Yaletown, this upscale Japanese restaurant has a large selection of food; whereas I concentrated on sushi dishes ... absolutely yummy!!!
Sat outside on the patio and service was friendly and professional. Would return anytime.

We ordered takeout. It said 15 min then we got an email that said 55. Not a huge deal but whatever.
The kicker for us was- this place had come recommended so we wanted to try it. Thus we got approx 100 dollars of sushi for takeout. It was an assortment of sushi, nigiri and rolls.
When my husband got back to our hotel room and opened the bag, there were TWO packets of soy sauce. There was literally twice as much wasabi in the trays as there was soy sauce. You can call us petty, but it screwed up the whole meal for us. And being that is was a 15 min walk one way from the hotel, we couldn’t just “run back” and get more. Super disappointed.

Best sushi in Vancouver by far!
Been to numerous sushi places in town and nothing compares to the fresh fish and variety from Japan.
We had a great time enjoying the food while watching the skilled professionals at work.

The place is located on a busy street. .. Small but elegant, it also has a veranda for outdoor dining.
We ate very well: fast and accurate service, smiling and kind waitresses. All the dishes ordered were very very good and well served. Fresh fish, even raw.
Price in the norm.

We ended up in this restaurant by chance and did not expect to be treated to a culinary adventure that included deliciously sumptuous pork belly that was served with a smoke trapped under a glass cone (quite a show), outstanding sablefish with beautiful glaze, beef tataki served over crisp apple slices, Omakase Premium Aburi set and a few delicious sushi rolls. A definite “we will be back” place.

This is my fourth visit to Bistro Sakana as I cannot get enough of its excellent food and great service. The most recent visit was during Vancouver’s Dine Out program which provides excellent value. The ahi tuna poke and sushi were excellent as the fish was very fresh and masterfully prepared. The cooked items were delectable especially the black cod misozuke. Highly recommended!

Stumbled into this pretty small and cosy Japanese restaurant and was pleasantly surprised to have Japan at our doorstep.
The special menu contains many types of fish that were apparently freshly brought in from Japan. Not to make any mistake choosing the right fish to taste, we opted for Chef’s Recommendation for the Sashimi and sushi plates. The fish were so fresh and tasty!
Wagyu beef was of good grade for a reasonable price.
There were a good selection of nice sake!
We were so impressed that the quality of food was well above expectations and service was excellent! If we had many more days in Vancouver, we would had love to go back for more.....
No wonder it’s so busy!!!

This restaurant was recommended to us by the staff at our hotel (L'Hermitage). It is located in the Yaletown area of Vancouver a gentrified area full of stores, restaurants, residences and small businesses. We sat outside on the terrace (converted from the loading dock of the warehouse which used to occupy the site).
Service was very friendly and efficient.
We only had sushi, although the menu offered more than that. The food was fresh, innovative, well presented and tasted great.

This place offers some amazing sushi options, and all the food we had tasted amazing. The staff was hard to find at times, so I would suggest looking at everything and ordering all at once. I was going to do three stars, but I went to four because the food is great and it’s a prime location.
