We are passionate about great bread and pastries. We specialize in naturally leavened sourdough breads and French-style pastries. All of our breads and pastries are made onsite, from scratch using fresh and local ingredients.

We will be back to this well kept secret in the Il Mercato on Commercial Drive. The Hot Chocolate Festival options were delicious and hot. The bread was delicious, grainy, and baked to perfection. The double baked almond croissant was tasty, yummy and enough for 2 people. Great customer service during Covid. Wear a mask.

This is a wonderful bakery offering a wide selection of bakery items made of quality ingredients in imaginative recipes. Bench is a veritable treasure trove of delicious and healthy items. Be sure to ask about their quiche, sold whole or by the piece. Service is terrific. I love this place and am grateful for their presence in our community.

I regularly shop here, but do so less now that the prices have become so high--or the items, like the baguettes, seem to have shrunk. We no longer purchase our favourite pastry--the morning bun--because they are too expensive and consistently over-baked and dry. The baguettes, small though they may be, are excellent, and easily the best I have had in Vancouver. The quiches are also excellent, but pricey.

I had their chocolate croissant from the Riley Park Farmers Market and it was fantastic. Buttery, crispy, and smooth chocolate. Highly recommended.

The Bench Bakehouse is a wonderful bakery on Commercial Drive. Everything sold is made of high quality wholesome and real ingredients and masterfully prepared. Yes, they use real butter❤️. I regularly purchase their croissants and other delicious treats, as well as their quiche and I’ve never been disappointed! This is a small local business that everyone should check out.

The baking is light, with so much flavour. My favourite still is the Aman.

There's just something about freshly made bread...I'm a sucker for any bakery with a well made loaf or two even though I bake a lot of our own bread! Bench's location is not new to us as we bought loads of bread (for catering and rye bread for us) at the long gone Strawberry Bakery. Bench Bakehouse is located in that odd mercato on the corner of Commercial and 1st and they've completely changed up the interior...why I barely recognized the space...and they did a great job! Back in the day, on a Saturday morning, the Europeans who made the trek to JNZ Deli. would then head down The Drive for their hit of good rye bread...where the heck can you get good rye bread in Vancouver these days anyway? Bench has a huge selection of lovely looking breads so, as per usual, I had to buy a few. They were very good! Hopefully at the time of this writing they will have gotten their bread slicing machine installed. When I asked if they were getting one that would slice breads thin they said yes and I think that's a great thing for a heavier loaf. Upshot...go and get some bread. Not sure about GF though! They have some sweet treats as well.
